Building a dual Xeon cruncher

Thanks to my own mistake, I'll have a pair of dual p4-xeon rigs up in less than two weeks. Possibly a 3rd if the deal goes through. 😉

This would be an awesome set up. I wish I had seen this earlier. I just added an Intel 3.2E and 3.4E. First Intel processors I have purchased since a 486 DX-2 66mhz. The Hyper-Threading is interesting. Neither one overclocked as of yet. Both running SETI Classic.

Take seriously the advice to have a fan blowing on the VRM and NB heatsinks. (I didn't replace the bubblegum)

I made a bracket to mount a 120mm slow turning (NO noise) fan pointing at the needed area.

This dually is the quietest computer I have owned. Quieter than my laptop 😕

I used fanless heatpipes (CoolerMaster E3W-NPTXC-01), a little pricier but quiet (IWT = jet plane) and 42 degrees C with four Folding@Home running at 2.5 Ghz with no mods (2-2-2-5 ram timings) 😀

A dually uses less juice than two computers.

Dalephi, are those still more expensive than the 2.8e @ 3.4ghz I have running at my clients site? ... heh.... 😉

I purchased the 3.2 for $219 and the 3.4 for $269. Both came with a low end motherboard. The price does not include tax and shipping. Purchased from Outpost.com. I am not sure how well the motherboards will overclock if any. Be fun trying.

Wow! Man I'd like to make some high performance, cheap-as-chips servers for with those procs!

Wonder how long it'd take to do it the way the guide says... One way to find out hey? 😉

PD

On a similar note, anyone have any extra/cheap xeons laying around? Or now where to get some for cheap (I'm in Europe, so someone who ships to Europe).
I have an MSI E7505 Master-LS2 Dual XEON board, new in packaging. It was shipped wrong, but I got to keep it for cheap. I've had it for a while now, but money is short. Need 2 xeons, got pretty much everything else (Case, PSU, 1Gb reg. ECC RAM, 18GbSCSI HDD, DVD).

LMK!

Go for it!

I'm trying to think of a way to justify to my wife making another one 😀
