Building a Dual Processor LAN/File/Web/E-mail/Proxy Server...what to use?

Ok...as in the topic...I plan to use 2k Pro or Server, this is for some work in my comp sci. classes and to host a small website. Which OS and what processors/MB should I use. I already have a single 18.2 GB WD Enterprise and a P3-450, should I use the 450 or go something faster...and I think the HD should be enough..and I have a controller for it. TIA

Linux would be best, because it is much more secure and takes advantage of SMP much more efficiently than any Windows OS. It also doesn't take much power in Linux to run a server like that unless you're planning on having lots of data transfer.

Dual-boot, make it a learning machine.

When i get back to school (and get some damn bandwith) I'm setting up a quad-boot machine.
Win98se - For some gaming and when I need somthing I haven't messed up.
Win NT - For learning basic lan management and IIS
Win 2k - Same as above, but newer.
Linux - just for sh*ts and giggles, but if I get my stuff straight, it'll boot to this mostly.

How much trafic are you expecting???

A 486 would be fine as a file/web/mail/firewall host for 10 clients.

I would go for a K6-2/P2/P3/Athlon if you serve 50 clients.

If you have more than 50 clients then a Katmai would be best/cheapest solution due to the large catch, or dual Katmai.

If you are aproching 200 clients then Xeon may be a good solution, but it would be wise to split the services up between multiples cheap (K6-2/P2-P3)servers Primary/Backup Domain Servers.

If you have lots of trafics or more than 200 clients then a IBM/Sun/SGI-Mips may be a good solution.

Curently I'm running NT4 with an OC PIII as a server at home with 128meg ram and rarely use more than 30% of the CPU resource.

Yes it will be like a small server, maybe to learn linux on..I am using a wireless LAN coneection...right now throught my PC.. mainly I need a PC to mess around on, and shre the connection, since I am starting my Comp Sci. classes...the website and E-mail will be for my dad's business and I al ready have the setup and everything...about 200-300 hits a week...hoping to grow...its mainly for his existing customers to send us PO's without faxing (stingy, they don't wanna pay the long dist) and get quotes and stuff...I would like to stick with the 450, since I already have it...I think that it should be enough...just wanted some extra opinions..thanks guys...and I'm still open to more ideas!

Well, I picked up 2 Xeons at CSO..and got the Super micro board at mwave...Sorry, I will never use an Epox board...as far as I am concerned, they are a green glue stick, as their name implies. No offense. I am tempted to take the Dual xeons for me and server the website on my Athlon 700@800...I would if the Xeons were 600+ (or were even made that fast, I w9onder if Intel too the time to m-lock the Xeons? 🙂)

arthurb: The CPUs are OEM so you need to get a heatsink/fan for it. 2CoolTek sells a Xeon heatsink/fan combo from GlobalWin. Its listed under their "Video Cooling" section. The price is not to bad at $14.50 each w/ 2 fans. 2CoolTek also has excellent shipping prices and don't gouge you. I'm going with CSO too because they offer a 1 year warranty as opposed to a 30 - 90 with most OEM CPUs.

Best of luck on the server.

Yeah...I actually went to 2cool......lol that is where I bought my P7125 and VOS32's 🙂 and my HD coolers....I like him...I ordered 2 oders within like 3 days of each other and he sent them anyway...lots of other places question that...but I just left stuff out of the order. Anyway, thanks for the help Windogg! I will post an update when all is running.
