Yes, u heard it right :)

I'm going to stick an entire computer system on a piece of wood and then put it on my wall and run it as a gateway :D

Was wondering if wood would be ok or was there another material I should look at. I was just thinking of putting the plastic that you get with new motherboards between the wood and motherboard. I think the hardest would be the mounting issues. Ideas, suggestions?

I went inside the back of a computer store once and saw all their test computers hooked up directly to the outlets!! They just mounted the damn motherboards straight onto the wall, I never seen anything more funny than 10 computers setup this way. Harddrives, cdroms, and others were just laying sprawled out on tables, oh my that was hilarious.

The computer components produce a lot of EMI, and they're susceptible to interference from outside sources. That's why even plastic cases have a metal frame. The frame blocks out the EMI. Having all the parts open to the air like that will introduce the risk of interference causing errors.

To make mounting easier, I'd vote for a thin piece of sheet metal between the computer and the wood - the mobo mounting screws will "stick" to the metal better.

Be sure to post some pics when you finish your project :D

I love it guys! :p

Thanks for the link Jim. Just verifys my hunt that it could be done and gives me some ideas ..hee hee.

Definitely going to post some pics once I get it "up" and running in about a month. I think of instead of mounting it on my wall, I'm going to put mount that sucker upside down on the bottom of my wooden desk for various reasons. Of course the cd-rom will be mounted right side up. :D :D. Image having that thing upside down and trying to put a cd in...haa haa.

Man, after this, I might never buy another computer case!

There should be no probles with building a systems on a peice of wood, its been done many times before. Dont worry about emi unless you wear a pace maker or plan to put the thing next to your tv and you dont like lines. Good luck and be sure to post some pictures when your done.

I had a dual 450 with the power supply, hard drive, and such sitting on a 2x8 for several months. I eventually tired of the constant fan noise and got a case.

Medical risks? The recent cell-phone-brain-cancer scare would probably induce a bunch of suspicions about wood-mounted PCs. But, since most people don't hold their computer up to their ear for extended periods, it shouldn't be a problem ;)

Even with no known risks, I'm not sure I'd like the idea of that much current as close to my crotch as the underside of a desk would put it. Why not wrap the thing in multiple layers of plastic wrap and mount it in a fish tank full of jello?
