Shes got the monitor, keyboard/mouse, printer, speakers and other stuff already. She wants a lower-end computer just to use Word, check her mail and store some mp3's. I have a feeling something is wrong with the above list or that im missing something though. Im a n00b at building computers so dont flame me TOO hard please. Thanks for any help.

-Matt

Edit: i got most of the stuff off the guides on here, but something tells me im doing something wrong.

Edit 2: Updated list.

change the motherboard to a cheap nforce2 board. i suggest biostar or shuttle. and does she really need a soundcard?

Good.

But why does your sister need a Radeon 9600?

I rather get an onboard video motherboard with geforce 4 mx or used gf4 mx.

🙂

Like i said i was basically going off stuff in the guide that WAS stickied on here. But different motherboard you think?

get this case instead. it looks great, and comes with a good power supply, which is the most important component in a computer.

get this motherboard. it uses the nforce2 chipset, and comes with onboard geforce4mx graphics, which is more than enough for your sister. this allows you to drop the video card all together to save some cash

I would buy a different case. For $42 I would want something better then that. You should be able to find another case exactly like that with a 350w PSU for like $20. I reccomended it to someone before and it was on newegg real cheap. It had many good reviews too. At first I was a bit skeptical at reccomending it because of thr PSu but the reviews said the same thing but it worked great,

no, not like that. get the antec. you will be glad you got a quality power supply.
you should be able to easily afford it once you toss out that video card and get the onboard me and Itmpls recommended.

once again, the power supply is the most important part of a computer.

😀

can you give us an updated list of parts so i can critique it some more?

instead of the sempron, i would pick up an athlonXP Text

you will need to buy a heatsink still, but the cheapest one from newegg should be just fine. Text

also, if she games at all, the onboard video on the nforce2 board is greatly affected by dual channel RAM. if you get 2*256 she will see much better performance in her graphics than the 1*512. however, if she doesnt game, i wouldnt worry about it.
