is intel or amd the way to go?

my friend wants a comp to record some music and im not sure whats best for the situation...

im think a ddr400 system with 1gb of ram and like a P4 2.8 or athlon 2800 XP????
The video doesn't have to be anything special and the sound card is going to come with the audio mixer...

Check Anand's CPU reviews to be sure, but it seems like Intel was better suited to this sort of thing.

Intel has always been better than AMD in media encoding, sadly. However, if he's just looking to record music then a fast hard disk and gobs of RAM will help more than just a fast processor alone.
If he's going to be encoding tons of files to different formats and wants it done extremely quickly, then a P4 or a Mac G5 would be best.
Otherwise, a 2500+ Barton (maybe with a small overclock) would be fine.
