What info can you give me on this? What forums can I read? Googling it wasn't too easy. I wrote down a whole sheet of notes for wiring, features, and functions. Here is what I plan:
Installing on a 1996 Lincoln Mark VIII, featuring a double din space for radio controls. I would like to pop a 6.5" touch screen LCD in there.
Equipment
6.5" LCD touch screen
MiniATX case
DC-DC carpc-friendly power supply
mobo with video/sound
CPU
low-profile 512mb
low-profile DVD
low-profile hdd ~80gb
low profile TV/FM/AM reciever card
USB GPS unit, USB wireless keyboard/touchpad with strong FM signal, USB 802.11g
^-- these are USB because there is probably no more room on the miniatx mobo
Functions:
Music, movies, TV/radio, dvd, wireless transfer, GPS navigation, vehicle diagnostics (OBD-II, need ideas of how to use it)
Issues
I park my car on the street (In NYC) so I'm a little scared about installing the screen right into the dash without having it be retractable, but if any of you can convince me that something else would be equal or better looking, please let me know.
I cannot find a 6.5" touch screen LCD on eBay, and lets face it, if its not on eBay its probably very hard to find. I also cannot find a regular 6.5" LCD in case I decide I do not need the touch screen.
Right now I'm deciding on whether I want to build my own case or not. If I do decide to, I would do something similar to this guy: http://www.carputerclub.com/ . Like that guy, my car also came factory with a 10-cd sony changer mounted in the trunk with a very nice carpetting to cover it. However, it is broken, and I'm sure I will have no regrets gutting it and making it into a very attractice carputer unit.
I didn't look into it that much, but I'm looking for an Operating System solution where it boots up to show a configurable menu with a control panel for equalizer settings, TV/radio presets, etc. I may just go with WinXP anyway.
