Building a budget gaming pc for my bro, no overclocking

The kid won't be overclocking at all. He just browses the web and only plays games.

I was wondering how the E6300 would stack up bone stock against the FX-55. Also, since he won't be overclocking does he really need DDR2 800 RAM? If not what cheaper ram can i get for him?

A non-overclocked FX-55 and a non-overclocked E6300 are going to be fairly close in performance. The FX-55 is going to be faster in older games, that don't have a dual-core patch, and the E6300 is going to be faster in newer games. I'd get the E6300, personally, since the majority of newer games released from now on will be dual-core enabled.

How about memory speeds?

Memory speed and CAS latency are not all that important with Core 2 Duo. DDR2-667 would be my recommendation.. at whatever CAS latency you can afford.

If you are not OC'ing, and sometimes when you are, DDR2-667. You do not NEED DDR2-800.
