building a basic file server how much PSU do I need

I'm building a very basic fileserver with the following specs:

MATX socket 370 board, integrated video
Linksys Lan PCI card
3x250gb Maxtor HDs
1x8gb Maxtor (for storing os and other stuff for the server)

would a 150watt sparkle MATX PSU be enough to run this?

I wouldn't use that tiny a PSU in a file server. My old server case had a 180W PSU (mATX form). That's with one hard drive, no floppy, no video card, one extra fan, and a simple cd-rom drive. With you wanting 4 hard drives and all that, I'd say you'll want a larger PSU.

I installed the guts of my server into a new Antec Aria case, with it's 300W PSU and it's really nice. Since it can handle three hard drives and one optical drive, it's something to consider. With you looking at a lowly 8GB hard drive to boot off of, I think you'd be 10000X better off just partitioning one of those 250GB drives with a 20GB boot partition and then share the rest of it. Especially since it's a good chance that 8GB drive is old (unless you recently ripped it out of an xbox).

What OS will you be going with on the server?

I'd go with at least a 250@ psu for having that many hard drives, you'll need to make sure you have adequate case cooling too, Maxtors tend to get a little toasty.

edit: if you can afford it why not get a raid controller and raid5 those drives for a little more reduncy and put your OS on the raid array.

like this one.

yeah going to go with a 300watt I got cheap. cooling is not an issue since everything is going to be mounted to a board and be mounted to the wall naked so nice free flowing air

don't really care about redundancy since nothing is on the server thats not easily replacable.
