So I'm trying to build 2 cheap-ass computer systems for some friends of mine. Big problem is that they want it as cheap as possible, but I want to make them something that'll last for a "long" time. Primarily, the boxes will be used for nothing more than E-mail, listening to mp3 files, standard web browsing...basicially basic computer stuff.

Here's what I have so far:

1.) AMD Duron 800MHz (200MHz DDR FSB) $36.00 Compubuzz.com
2.) ASUS A7VL-VM (VIA w/ audio & video) $76.00 CDR Express
3.) GlobalWin WBK68 $14.00 Microchip Computers
4.) Crucial 256MB PC133 CAS2 SDRAM $42.49 Crucial.com (promo)
5.) Maxtor DiamondMax Plus60 (20GB HD) $77.00 newegg.com
6.) Linksys 10/100 NIC $14.99 CompUSA
7.) Modem 56K v.90 ~$25.00
8.) TDK 12/10/32 CD-RW $79.99 CompUSA
9.) Enlight CAS-ESLIM (w/ Sparkle 300W ps) $88.00 Microchip Computers
10.) Logitech Internet Keyboard/Optical Mouse$29.50 mwave.com
11.) Samsung 753DF $159.99 CompUSA

SUBTOTAL: ~$643
TOTAL: ~$670

I'm trying to get the total price under the $600 mark for sure...maybe in the low $500s?? I know it can be done, help me out please.

Thanks a lot

To keep that kind of quality, you will be hardpressed to lower the prices too much. The only thing that was glaringly expensive to me was the case. Newegg has an Enlight case with 300 W PSU for $50 last time I checked. That's a $38 savings anyway.

make sure you check all your resellers at http://www.resellerratings.com/

Compubuzz has a pretty bad track record...I would recommend getting your cpu from newegg, it's only a few bucks more

and, I believe Staples has that NIC for $10.

Other than that...I really don't think you can get the price much lower than that...unless you went onto Ebay and got stuff there...or maybe you should post your list at our For Sale/Trade forums

Will you need both a NIC and a 56K modem? Also, I agree about the case and PSU. You can get one similar from newegg for something like $65 shipped. Other than that, it's tough to lower the costs any further.

Also, how about speakers?

Thanks guys...yeah, I was thinkgina Sparkle ps was kinda overkill for not overclocking.

As far as the modem/NIC situation goes, I know both women have access to my LAN now, but they may move to a location where they need dial-up.

OS: WinMe or Win2K or WinXP (available to me around November) any for $5 each since they are Univ. of Texas students (MS cross-licensing agreement).

Speakers will probably be the cheapest (quality doesn't matter) 2.1 set. (I think they would enjoy anything that makes noise).

<< You also don't list any software (OS or otherwise)..... >>

Maybe they'll be going Linux or FreeBSD.
