Building 1st PC, format or not?

Starting to build my new PC... changing everything except for my WD 160 Hard drive. My old computer is/was so bad I'm not going to list it...lol

Asus A8N-E nForce4 Ultra Athlon 64(FX) Skt939 DDR ATX Motherboard w/Audio, Gigabit LAN, RAID/Serial ATA
AMD Athlon 64 3700+ Processor (San Diego) Socket 939
eVGA GeForce 6800 GS CO SE 256MB PCIe
Antec Sonata II Quiet Super Mid Tower Case (Piano Black) w/450W Power Supply
Corsair TWINX2048-3200C2 2GB Kit DDR400 XMS3200 Memory w/Black Heat Spreader

I not plan to overclock anything at 1st, just want to have a successful 1st build.
How important is it to format the hard drive...and go with a clean start on everything. I most likely will format it; I just wondering if I chose not too, would I have problems...

Thanks for the any advice, long time troller, all the thread here have help my PC knowledge grow. Thanks to all. Really love this site you guys do an awesome job!

Any other advise would help too with any of the items....

If you search in the OS forum or the AT FAQs, you can find information on migrating your existing windows installation to a new system/replacing your motherboard (I would recommend either using sysprep or a Repair Install).

Thanks guys I did forget to list my OS.

Windows XP SP2.

Thanks for helping a noob, I'll check the other threads...

A repair install will probably work just fine. I know some think using sysprep is the best way to go, but it really doesn't get any easier than the repair install method.

I recently added a new MB(Nvidia chipset to Uli)/CPU to an existing VC/RAM/HDD and had zero issues with a repair install. I had already backed up all my data in case the repair install didn't work, but once it booted, it was exactly like it was hours earlier. I didn't have to reinstall anything. Even my Internet cookies went undisturbed.

Thanks Ike....

I know most favor the clean/fresh start, But I'm hoping to save some time on the whole project. I will back up my files to a DVD, most of the stuff I could afford to loose. The windows security patches will take for ever!!!!

Thanks again!

Hopefully all my stuff will get here on Friday and then I can go to work!!!!
