Okay, here goes. Just a few tips for picking out parts.

1. Newegg good. Newegg VERY, VERY good.

Newegg is THE best place to get anything, period. However, it's not the cheapest.

2. ASUS good. Gigabyte often not so good. Chaintech good. Soyo often not so good. ABIT almost always good.
Just some reccomendations to motherboards. Mind you, there are exceptions, so check the reviews at the 'egg. (Don't buy anything with less than 4 stars.)

3. Get LOTS of ram. At least 1 gigabyte.

4. Invest in a good heatsink, fan setup, and case.
A crappy case just is'nt worth the headaches. Mind you, it need'nt be expensive; just snag someone's old Antec Sonata or the like for 40$ or so on the F/S/T forum.

An outlay of parts, and budget for a decent PC:

Sempron 3100+ CPU. 77$.

"Open box" GEforce 6100 motherboard w/ PCI express. 37$.

Sunbeam PSU. (I might go for something a bit better, but this one is rated pretty darn well.) 480 watts. 20$

NEC 16x DVD burner. 40$.

Powercolor X800GTO graphics card w/ 256mb RAM. 110$. Good performer!

Total cost from NewEgg: 410$ + shipping.
This machine should do moderate gaming just fine, in addition to whatever else you throw at it.

A well-rated case to put this stuff in:
Cooler Master Centurion, 45$+nasty shipping.

Gigaram 2x512mb kit, PC3200 (400mhz), CAS2.5. 77$.

Hitachi Deskstar 80GB SATA-II 7200rpm/8mb HDD. 50$

There's a brand new issue of MaximumPC magazine for sale now, and once again they are focusing on building a great pc. You can get a lot of good free information online, but I would also recommend you spend a few bucks on that issue for a concise, comprehensive and reasonable up to date report on issues of interest to you.

btw, I also shop at newegg, but even if you shop elsewhere, I find that the user reviews at newegg are helpful in making choices.
