a new comp after crimbo (prolly feb), lately i have been getting out of touch lately with hardware and would like to ask a couple of Q's...

1. what would be my best choice of mobo? abits latest/greatest or are there some new fangled mobo leaders out there?

2. looking for fastest available proc at time (amd) which will be 2800+? whatever it is, i'm looking for pretty quiet but cool hsf (putting up with delta beast atm 🙁). any reccomendations? i was looking at fortis monster 90, will that do?

3. will the geforce FX be the best out at that time? if so will it be worth it over the 9700?


any help greatly appreciated.

IMO,

1) ABit has seem quite to me, ASUS is one of my favorites along with the EPoX. If you go the VIA route get the KT333 chipset, last I heard the KT400 wasn't all that good. Also, another is the nForce2 chipset from nVidia, there is a thread around here that a user did a review on a the ASUS nForce 2 chipset, seems good to me and it's not VIA 😉

2) Athlon 2800+ is available, I've seen it NewEgg but you have to purchase a motherboard with it. Link, it's a 166 FSB for $410(CPU only) , might be good to get it with a motherboard purchase there too.

Don't know anything about the HSF you listed but for non-overclocking the stock will do fine, but someone here will hopefully comment on the noise of the fan.

3) GeForceFX not until Feb/April IIRC, how much better than the 9700 Pro? Benchmarks will tell when they ship to reviewers and release the NDA on it. But since it came out after the 9700 Pro it probably will be better and the driver support is always superb from nVidia.

i'll look into asus/epox mobo's, not too interested in the nforce as i have adequate sound atm
