Alright, I'm building one for my first time, and I'm stuck on step 1.

The cpu fits as easily as could be into the socket (A) but then when the cpu is in, the latch won't come down. It
comes down just fine when no cpu is in, but when it's in, it won't come down, and the socket won't move back.
Please let this be a fixable problem because it seems silly to RMA a board because of THAT. Oh yeah, and
when I move the latch, cpu or no, it creaks like a door.

ok, you're gonna have to provide some more detail there. What motherboard are you using? If this is an Abit KT7, or the RAID version, the thermistat sits under the chip and is manufactured kinda high... All you'll need to do is push it down a little, not too much though, u want it to be as close as possible. If it's not the Abit board, it is still likely that the thermistat is your problem, however, i've only heard complaints of it on the Abit board. Make sure that when u put the chip into the socket it lays flat, lift the board to eye level so u can see... The latch does close a little tight when there's a chip in the socket, and some creeking may occur, but if your cpu is in the socket correctly just latch it, even if it's not, i don't think you'll damage the latch or the cpu.
