build your own micro-server

Pretty neat little case, but its main advantage seems to be hot swappable drive bays. Given how rare drive swaps are on a small-scale NAS setup, I think I'd rather have the extra two drive bays (6 total) and ATX PSU compatibility of the Node 304.

That is a neat case.

Thanks to the magi of eSATA, I recently added a couple smallish JBOD enclosures to my FreeNAS box. (This one and a 6bay hot swap one I built out of an old CD tower.) The Apex MI-008 has no HDDs in it now, which kind of makes me happy. (It got hot in there.)

The bottom shelf of my printer stand emits a loud hum and looks like a toaster convention for blinking lights enthusiasts.

This is the case that I've been using for my server:

Unfortunately, it's been discontinued. 4x hot-swappable 3.5" bays, one internal 2.5" mount point, and a slimline ODD bay (that I converted into another 2.5" bay since I didn't need an ODD on a server).

Most mITX boards don't even support 6 SATA devices, but I got a Zotac H67 board that does (actually, mine supports 7 because it also has an eSATA port on a separate controller). 🙂
