Build your own Laptop????

There are a bazillion sources for system parts for PC's, but has anyone built their own laptop? Having built a couple of PC's now, I'd like to try to build a laptop. There are sites to have custom laptops built for you, but is there a source for laptop parts, including 'case with screen'??

Thanks,
JD

Yep that's the one that I was going to mention, it really isn't worth it though.

I just took a look at prices and it does not seem worth it. Maybe someday...

I did some price research on this recently and you can buy a much better laptop than you can buy the separate components and build yourself. Sorry.

This question comes up rather frequently now. Laptops use a lot of proprietary components because it's difficult to cram an entire PC into a small, light, power-efficient package. I'll take this opportunity to show off my Scanner PC. It took quite a bit of work to fit a microATX board (integrated video, sound, etc) into a fairly large scanner case and still have it get adequate cooling. Laptops require re-designing of almost every component to accomodate different chips (power efficient models, battery charging circuitry, etc) and still get at least a little airflow. I've taken apart a few different models of laptop, and they only have a few basic similarities, in that there's a large motherboard covering a lot of the inside, with odd-shaped cutouts to accomodate drives, expansion slots, and other smaller circuitboards. It's a crazy 3d puzzle.

It really isnt worth it. Many enthusist (sic?) laptops have the same chassis and similar components. You can build a laptop but in the long run it is probably cheaper to just buy what you want outright. Unless you have $$$ to burn in case something goes wrong buy a highend gaming laptop. Maxximum PC had a great review a few issues ago on highend gaming laptops ond of the 10 or so they tested about 4 of them looked exactly alike but were from different companies.

It's fun, and it's a cool experience, but it's cheaper just to buy one. Especially with all these awesome deals going around like $750 off Dell Inspirons and HP trade-ins.

We need more Turion64 processors readily available in these pre-built systems 🙁

That's the reason I still don't own a laptop.. I'm holding out for something with the Turion64 MT processors here in Canada
