I was thinking about going the route of assembling my own laptop, due to no company having exactly what I am looking for.

I was thinking about getting one of the Asus M6 barebones http://usa.asus.com/products/notebook/m6series/m6000n/m6000n_overview.htm

Is there any other ones I should be considering? I am looking for a Centrino compatiable setup, with a Radeon 9700.

Does anyone have the M6? How do you like it?

edit: Also, where can you purchase the Barebone Asus kits? I haven't seen them at any sites..

Check notebookforums.com -> Other System Discussions; there are several threads about M6N.

Thanks for the link, a lot of good info there.

Does anyone here have any experience with the Asus barebone laptops? The price seems really good for a reliable (supposibly?) laptop.

is there anything particular you would like to know about the m6? my friend builds that particular model for customers. His name is Josh, he works for www.topmic.com. He definitely recommends it over any dell. If you do plan on getting that model wait for 9700 and WSXGA+ to come out or maybe it already did come out(think in japan only though)

you can go to www.topmic.com. find the contact number. ask for josh, tell him alex sent you. You can talk to him about the laptop one on one.

I just wanted to know what people thought about them overall. I know it seems you can save a ton of cash putting together your own laptop, but not too many people talk about it here on this forum.

I do actually plan on waiting for the 9700, but I will be getting the one with a 4:3 display, that is..if I decide to get it.

from my knowledge after reading the notebookforums, it seems people talk about an issue with screen gradient which I have no knowledge of, either does my friend. Battery life however is incredible on this model, 4-4.5hrs+ is something that I look at. The weight is 1lb more than the T40 series. I'll find out more from him. He handles a lot of laptops daily, but i think he is bias and favors asus. I'll have to visit him down at the shop and see how it feels compared to an IBM.

Great. Could you ask him what kind of battery life you would get with having dual batteries (I am guessing around 8-9 hours...) I am also wondering if you were to use dual batteries would you lose functionality of anything? Like with the Dell 8200's, if you wanted 2 batteries, you would have to take out the floppy drive.

edit: Could you also ask him what kind of battery life it gets if you are playing a dvd the whole time. Also, if you are playing, say a 3d game the whole time.

Thanks..

I heard the M6N won't get the 9700 upgrade. If it does, I heard it will only get 64mb. Try to get the compal noteook with 9700. I know that powernotebooks sells that notebook as their own brand.
