PLEASE when you POST threads asking for input on system builds tell us
1. What YOUR PC will be used for. That means what types of tasks you'll be performing.

Streaming videos, netflix etc... light gaming, some fps gaming. At 1080p resolution

2. What YOUR budget is. A price range is acceptable as long as it's not more than a 20% spread

<500

3. What country YOU will be buying YOUR parts from.

USA

4. IF you're buying parts OUTSIDE the US...

NA

5. IF YOU have a brand preference. That means, are you an Intel-Fanboy, AMD Fanboy, ATI-Fanboy, nVidia-Fanboy, Seagate-Fanboy, WD-Fanboy, etc.

No pref. Best for the money...

6. If YOU intend on using any of YOUR current parts, and if so, what those parts are.
Yes, Asrock 970m pro3
Gtx 950
Sandisk 480GB SSD
FX6100
Crucial Ballistix Sport XT 16GB Kit 8GB x2 DDR3 1866 MHz PC3-1490
Atx case
Decent power supply (will support latest cpu/video card.
CM Hyper 212Evo cooler.

7. IF YOU plan on overclocking or run the system at default speeds.
Default right now overclock down the road

8. What resolution, not monitor size, will you be using?
1080p

9. WHEN do you plan to build it?
Within 2 weeks

10. Do you need to purchase any software to go with the system, such as Windows or Blu Ray playback software?
Have retail windows 10, no extra software needed.

I want to upgrade, i was thinking cpu/mb
Maybe a better case. I dont need any 5.25 bays. Only 2.5 for ssd. Im not having any issues with my current hardware just time to upgrade. Plan to get into some PC gaming. Just want the biggest bang for the buck under 500. I want to upgrade whatever makes the most sense right now. I would like to use my ddr3 if i can, if not its fine I'll gonwith ddr4. The parts left over from this will go toward a htpc/web gameing build for living room. In a couple months.

Intel i3-6100 CPU
H170 based motherboard
2x8GB DDR4 memory

This will way outperform your current system. You would even have enough money left over to replace the video card with a GTX 1050 and/or get a HDD for games as well.

Any recommendation on brand of board, and memory ?

Well I have been using Crucial branded memory since 2000 with no problems. And my current motherboard is from ASRock.

Yeah, that's why i asked here, i haven't built anything since the xp1700. Everything since has been pre-built.... mainly hp. Then upgrades every couple years. Now things are calming down. I want to get back intro building. And try some pc gaming.

Don't pay extra for the H170 chipset, you will be fine with B150 or even H110. Simply put, H170 is B150 with firmware RAID support, and B150 is H110 with 2 extra SATA ports and DIMM slots. There are other differences but they don't really matter at all.

Also, i3-6100 isn't massive upgrade over the FX-6100. It is faster to be sure but in games which can utilize all of the FX cores, you won't see much of a difference. In addition, there are some games which scale with physical cores but cannot use HyperThreading, so you will be stuck with 2 threads with the i3 (Tomb Raider for instance). I would recommend going i5 instead, it will be a more substantial upgrade.

Atx case
Decent power supply (will support latest cpu/video card.
Please clarify make/model.

From recommendations, and looking around, ive come up with this.
I5 4590 haswell
The case recommended earlier
A 500Gb m2 ssd for added space
Fatality z97 board
Use existing memory
What do you guys think ? Then another upgrade next year and this build would go to the kids. The other option i was considering was
I5 6600k
Asrock z170 pro4s
16Gb ripjaws V
The recomended case from earlier, and possibly the 1050ti VC in a month or so
Either would be around my budget.

VIVO V01 atx case.

According to specs, the Vivo V01 can take up to a 150mm tall CPU cooler. Hyper 212 EVO is 159mm tall, it shouldn't even fit. But I assume you've been using it without problems so far? A new case makes sense though, as long as it doesn't subtract from the budget for other parts.

I don't think new Haswell parts make much sense, it's a 2,5 year old platform at this point. Would rather buy Skylake or upcoming Kaby Lake and sell the current RAM or use it in a different build.

I also don't think paying for overclocking makes sense here, it doesn't seem like something you're likely to do. You have to be pretty hardcore with gaming and require the absolute best fps in the most demanding games for overclocking to be worth it.

I would probably go for the i5-6500/6600 with a H110/B150 board, as suggested earlier. Z series board just isn't needed, especially for a multiplier locked (non K) processor.

GTX 1050 Ti is probably a good buy and moderate upgrade from the GTX 950, we'll see how it performs when it's released. It may end up being a little lackluster, you might want to consider the GTX 1060 instead, it'll make more of a difference coming from GTX 950.

However, I'm wondering if upgrading is even necessary. I mean, light fps gaming on 1080p seems exactly the sort of thing that FX-6100 + GTX 950 should handle perfectly well. No? Whereas for internet and browser games (which you said these old parts would be used for later on), they are definitely overkill. It would be much cheaper to just buy new HTPC parts, such as a Celeron/Pentium, 4GB RAM, cheap H110 board, use integrated graphics. Or buy Intel NUC6i3SYH for HTPC duty.

The case recommended earlier

Which case is that? I don't see any case mentioned in the thread, apart from the Vivo you own.

I would go with the I5 6600K option. Besides you can always move to the next gen CPUs if you by any chance want to upgrade.

There is nothing wrong with your current system for the needs you have stated. I think the GPU is probably the weakest link for any gaming. OC the fx6100 to 4ghz and slap a RX 480 8 GB or GTX 1060 6 GB in there. Good to go for a while longer while you save up.

Yeah i was thinking of trying overclocking current setup, with a new video card. Then see how it goes.

Well this project is now on hold. Ordered a 1060, now clutch went in car. So that gets done before anything else. Hoping the new card gives me enough. Thanx for all the input guys.
