no monitor, keyboard, etc...already have those. think i can squeeze in a 6800gt?

also a new power supply might be nice...my vantec "stealth" is pretty loud

Case: Antec Sonata with 380W PSU included
CPU: A64 3000+ 939 (retail)
MB: DFI NF4 Ultra
RAM: 1G Corsair Value
HD: The cheapest you can find (preferably at least 120 gigs)
Optical: NEC 3520a
GPU: 6600GT, the 6800 will be very tight with the budget you're talking about

Do you upgrade your comp a lot? If not you could get by with a socket 754 system and save some money on the cpu/mobo. Since GPU is more important for gaming anyway that's where you should spend the greenbacks.

socket 939 is not significantly more than 754 (less than $100), and it allows for better future proofing. its worth it IMO

yeah, a gaming system needs a gaming GPU. If you can squeeze out for more than a 6600GT you really should. I shake my head every time I read about some guy with a bigger budget going with a 6600GT for a gaming system, $800 is tight but should be doable to squeeze in an X800XL which will definately be worth it over the 6600GT.

Well if you keep a comp for 2 or 3 years and replace it there's really no need for 939 right now. Yeah 939 performs a bit faster but unless you are an overclocker, it's not worth the difference. A 754 2800+ is around 100$ right now, mate that with a 6800GT and you'll be all set for a few years.

mobo - 70$
cpu - 120$
1 gig ram - 100$
case and psu - 80$
hard drive - 60$
6800GT - 340$
optical - 60$

Total - $822

I won't argue against it being more future-proof to some degree, but $80-100 could be a significant portion of the budget for some people. It's all relative to one's individual situation.

It's probably unnecessary to go overboard on the GPU if you don't feel you have to run everything with all the bling turned on at a very high resolution.

i don't mind swapping out parts if it's worth it money wise, i might get a s754 now and keep my video card, then upgrade video, then sell both and jump to pci-e in a year or so...
