Build Rituals?

Just placed the last order for my new build and the Brown Santa started delivering computer goodness earlier this week! :D

I was curious to see if any of you do anything special when prepping for a new build. I'm an avid mountain biker, and we usually have build parties where we get some riding buddies together, some good beer, a camera to document the build, and some good music. Makes for a fun few hours putting together a new bike. I'm thinking all do something similar for this computer build.

Anyone do something similar??

I focus, step by step. Before powering up, I double check connections, wires, card & memory seating, etc.
I don't want anyone around when I build a system.

I either order, or make food before hand. I love to eat while I work on computers. Plus it gives friends something to do while they check out your new beast!

Last night I played with my 8-month-old son, fed him dinner, had a couple of beers...and then intensely studied directions for mounting my Tuniq on to my x6800. Then I double-checked directions for applying Artic Silver at their website. Got that done successfully (with just once pulling the backplate off cuz it wasn't aligned perfectly), dropped in two gigs of Tracers, and mounted the Bad Axe II into the Armor.

Tonight: more kid, more beer, then cabling. If I have time, I might drop in the optical drive and videocard. Most-likely I'll do this in the media room, and pop on either Starship Troopers or xXx.

I get all nekkid and do the worm on our carpet. It makes my secret parts feel funny.

Don't lie, I know you like that, too!

LOL!! That's comedy  I assume you meant private parts, or do you really have secret parts?

Well odds are no ones ever seen them, so that would kind of make them secret.

Dont worry I kid!!

Insulting a lifer is probably not a smart idea, you guys most likely won't see me for a while.

I don't like distractions when building a system either - I can screw things up badly enough all by myself... ;)

MechBgon at http://www.mechbgon.com has a nice, online PC builder's guide if you need one. Sometimes reading the manuals helps but often not. Force yourself to take a break from it every half hour or so to shake the cobwebs out.

'Manuals'? What are these 'Manuals' you speak of? :)

I just go at it and hope for the best. Slow and steady wins the rig building race.

Prayer helps too.

I slaughter two chickens under a full moon so the Gods will look favorably upon my build.

hrm, not really any rituals.
I may do a short prayer before powering up the first time :)

Really my only suggestion that people do before starting a build.
Set up the brightest room you can.
Make sure you have a strong flashlight.

I've tried building pc's in rooms with just an overhead light or lamp and its a pain.

Thats helped me more than anything.

Use the edge of a cheap PC case to slaughter them?

how long does it take you guys to build a computer usually? Seems it takes you guys a while if you're doing it over 2 days...
I just built a media center PC, and it's not bad at all. I swear it took me 20-25 minutes putting it together, and everything worked good on first boot. longest parts are installing the OS and drivers, but actual build time wasnt over 25 min!

Bikes and computers, two things that are fun to build from parts  As for rituals, I like to involve pizza if possible. But I don't often get the chance to build computers anymore :( Bikes are another story. *looks down at the perpetually grease-stained hands on the IBM Model M keyboard*

I always search for weeks on the case i want, buy that first... Then just set up on my dresser for a week or so and ponder ways to make it better. Then I disassemble and paint, sand, grind, drill, and all that good stuff.

Then I order all the parts and wait till i get every last piece.First off... crank up some tunage. Gotta have some music to build properly. Then clean off my desk, vacum the floor in case i drop a screw, it's easy find.. Pull a trash can close for wrappers and such. Get to building.. Bout half an hour, hour later.. try and turn it on..

If it works, install windows and starting downloading stuff.. If not.. Chunck it out the 2nd story window and RMA it.
