Roommate wants a computer for around $800. He doesn't want anything fancy, just a basic system to surf the net and burn CD's and occasional gaming (not a hardcore gamer). I'm lookin to build it for him just for more experience in building a system. If you can include the name of the parts, it'd be great (I've been out of the mobo/cpu/hardware scene for a while now). Basic needs are:

1. CDRW
2. DVD
3. Decent Video Card

Thanks! ^_^

Bah $800 is too much.

What are you going to be doing mainly? Surfing? Gaming? Both? More info is needed :)

www.dell.com

you will find computers there will within your friends budget.

at least go for a 1GIG machine with a 32MB geforce card and 256MB ram.

I build my own machines but if its for someone else, I usually find that i save myself alot of headaches if i send em over to dell.com

Well, I'm tech support already.. so it doesn't really matter to me.. =P Yeah, monitor and a cheap copy of Win98 on the forums will do. He'll be mostly typing and surfing net and playing games (like Deer Hunter or Rainbow Six).

Is DELL or GATEWAY the better place to order one?

EDIT: How do I move it there? Or do i have to create a whole new thread there?

I tell them in advance that the free answer is CTRL+ALT+DEL and that everything else is $20 an hour.

i prefer gateway.. its cheaper than pay thru your nose dell.

Edit:

Gateway.. 600 bucks

Just add an another stick of ram (crucial - 70 bucks for 256 is expensive upgrade) maybe go to a bigger hard drive (40 gb for 50 bucks)and maybe 25 buck upgrade to the boston accoustics speakers and your set.. good clean system for under 800.
