Build for DVD Ripping

Building a computer mainly for DVD Ripping, encoding, burning...

Was looking at:

Opteron 144
DFI LanParty nF4
Seagate 7200.9 ~120GB (SATA)
Probably some OC Value VX (the voltage loving stuff 😉 )

I could also go Intel, but not sure what I could get that would offer similar performace at a similar price. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

If you're on a tight budget, & you primarily use the system for video-related work, the Pentium D 805 is a very cheap dual core, & for encoding video (assuming the appz you want to use utilize both cores - most do AFAIK), even a crappy dual core like the 805 > single core anything.

If you can spend more, the X2 3800+ would be the way to go.

If you plan to do lots of DVD9 to DVD5 conversions, use the program in my sig.

DVD-RB + CCE > * for that 🙂

Oh, & welcome to the forums!

Invest in a 200 to 300GB drive if you're serious about DVD ripping. PATA drives are cheaper and just as fast as SATA. Watch CompUSA for those Friday specials. I purchased a Seagate 200GB PATA drive with 5 yr warranty last week for $30 after rebate.

Video files fill up quicky. You'll need a fast DVD DL reader to quickly extract data. I believe the NEC3550 is not riplocked so you should be able to reach 16x speed. My 3100 Sempron overclocked to 2.44GHz is only running at 55% CPU load when ripping and transcoding on-the-fly. As for RAM, Corsair Value Select is more than adequate.

Oh, forgot to mention, there is a 250Gb external HDD that the files will be moved to after everything is done with ... a bigger HDD would be the last place I will add money to at this point. I can always wait and find a special like furballi mentioned.

Also, I will be overclocking the Opteron if I go that route, which is why I chose it, the memory, and the motherboard.
