Build for 6yr old son

1. What YOUR PC will be used for:

PC is for my 6 year old son who just uses it to play Minecraft, Spore, Age of Empires II, cube world, etc... both solo and multi with his brother and I. I won't be allowing him to play any FPS titles or anything too demanding I think. At least for 5 years or more by which time I will hand down my current 4670K build(see sig) and get the latest stuff for my pc. So I'm thinking of going inexpensive option here.

2. What YOUR budget is: $200-$600 USD

3. What country YOU will be buying YOUR parts from: USA, newegg, microcenter ok.

4. N/A

5. Maybe prefer Intel and Nvidia but not locked into it.

6. If YOU intend on using any of YOUR current parts, and if so, what those parts are.
- GTX 275
- seasonic MII 620 PSU
- antec P180b case
- SATA DVD drive

7. IF YOU plan on overclocking or run the system at default speeds. I can overclock no prob but prefer to not spend money on CPU cooler if I can avoid it.

8. What resolution, not monitor size, will you be using? an older 1680x1050 but if that monitor dies probably 1080p.

9. WHEN do you plan to build it? between now and next two weeks ok

X. Do you need to purchase any software to go with the system, such as Windows or Blu Ray playback software? Windows 8.1 w/ student discount from microsoft.com is my plan ~$75.

My thoughts:
-G3258/PC Mate z97 Microcenter combo $109 w/tax (overclock with stock cooler)
-8 gb ram ~$70
-SSD not sure what size/brand Maybe 256gb as the only drive. $80-120? (MX100 128gb or 256gb? $69 vs $109)
reuse GTX275 for now, maybe 750ti if needed later
reuse PSU, Case

I was thinking about going crazy and giving him my current 4670K/Z87 build and getting myself a new 4690K/Z97 combo at Microcenter, but I think for his uses, it's a waste. The G3258 allows me to do the whole upgrade for ~$260 plus windows. Seems like a good way to go.

What am I missing?

Overall I'd say it's a solid build. For the SSD I'd go with a Crucial MX-100 as it'd be a good fit for your budget. You might want to consider upping the RAM to 8 GB if he plays with any minecraft modpacks. I know the Direwolf20 FTB modpack I play with will use a hefty amount of RAM.

wow, nsafreak, good catch. His brother plays the Direwolf20 mod on my old i7-860K w/8gb and that's what made me want to do this whole upgrade. His current rig can't play it! (opteron 185, winXP and 2gb ram).

So I will definitely be going with 8gb ram then.

Hmmm....maybe I should just spring for the $200 more for 4690k/asrock extreme 4 combo???? aaahhh

Sounds like Dad is looking for a way to get himself a Christmas upgrade. Feel free but an i5 would be overkill for the games listed.

Yes, of course you are right. I just built my current 4670k/z87 in March of this year!

I'm going with the G3258/PC Mate MC combo, 8gb ram, MX100.
