Looking at building a nice rig, which will hopefully last for a number of years (with a few upgrades here and there). Presume, for a moment, the it will overall not be replaced for 3-5 years, but that it will be upgraded piecemeal. If you have any advice for changing things on the stuff I'm fairly secure about, please let me know, otherwise, advice would nice on the stuff I have no clue on). Looking in the $2-3k range, so have some fun, I guess.
*Case: Antec P180B (new model- one part I already have).
*Case Fans- A few Yate Loons. Supposed to be significantly quieter. For $10 total, I think it's a reasonable investment, though if you disagree, let me know.
*PSU: up for question. Hoping for something on the quiet side with high efficiency.
*Motherboard: Good question. I've been looking at the P5K-Deluxe, since I do ultimately want wireless. On the other hand, that can be handled by an add-in card, too, so I'm not wedded to that board.
*CPU- Q6600. Actually, Q6600 post-July 22nd.
*RAM- 4GB Ram. Yes, I know, it's a lot, but it'd be nice not to have to be adding stuff too soon. Feel free to recommend brand, speed, etc.
*Storage- Good question. I'd like some redundancy for backup, but feel free to recommend whatever you'd like- RAID controller, multiple HDDs, etc.
*Video- Not a huge gamer, but I do on occasion play some graphics intensive games, so I've been thinking 8800GTS 640. Kind of in a pickle here regardless, due to the lack of Vista support.
*Sound- Modded Emu-0404 (already have). There are Beta Vista drivers now, with final ones due out Q3.
*Headphones- PPA v1.1->AD A900s. Already have.
*Speakers- Onkyo TX-SR504 to 2xARXP62s, 1xARXP242C, 2xARVP25s, 1x Onix X-sub. Already have.
*Monitors- Dell 2407 main, Dell 2000fp secondary. Already have.
*OS- Vista Home Premium x64- already have.
*Optical Drive(s)- Any recommendations?
*Keyboard- MS Wireless Natural Pro or whatever the official title is. Basically, the wireless split keyboard combo, keyboard only.
*Mouse- Currently using an MX1000, but it's getting a bit flaky. Look for another one or any advice?
*Office Suite- Office 2k7 Enterprise. Already have.
*Wifi card- If going with something other than the P5K-Deluxe, please advise. Looking for something that'll do WPA2-PSK, but otherwise no special requirements.
It'd be lovely to have a motherboard with a good number of USB connectors, but on the other hand I also have a couple of USB hubs around, so that's not a strict requirement.
Note that I'm not particularly planning on overclocking here- I'm looking for something stable to last a few years, with some data redundancy.
