I'm going to build a computer (my first time). I intend to use the computer primarily for gaming, but I don't need Alienware. I don't have a hi-def monitor and I don't intend on replacing my current one (it has sentimental value... well... there are fingerprint smudges on it that just couldn't be satisfactorily replaced on a new monitor). After doing some research and taking into account what I want to spend (No more than $1200 Canadian), I am looking at these parts:

- AMD Phenom x4 9550 Processor
- XFX 750a SLI motherboard
- XFX GeForce 8800GT Alpha Dog Edition Graphics Card (With the intention of getting another and enabling SLI at a later date -- extra card not included in price range)
- OCZ SLI Dual Channel 4096MB PC6400 DDR2 800MHz RAM
- LG Super Multi 22x SATA DVDRW Drive
- Seagate Barracuda 500GB Hard Drive
- Apevia X-Supra S-Type Case
- Apevia Beast 680W PSU (included with case)

With these parts, I come in well below my $1200 range. (Around $900 CA, by my calculations)

So, what are your thoughts on that system? What could be improved (without major price hikes)?

Even the best Phenoms barely keep up with the Q6600 that's been out for much longer. If you're going to build a system with a $1200 budget there's just no sense in going AMD right now.

SLi is not an upgrade path, and it sounds like your monitor is hardly large enough to justify it anyway. Get a motherboard based on an Intel chipset like the P45 and get a single HD4850 or similar.

The things I've heard about PSUs bundled with Apevia cases have not been complimentary.
