I would say a Duron based system would leave money to buy other things for the system

Sounds like you are talking about a Lunix derivation...
But really, Most Win9x lockups are from the use of software and the Users Inputs... it doesn't totally crash on it's own, unless there is something mis-configured...

As for MoBo, if you're buying now, Asus P3b-F, CUBX, or the CUSL2...
and Abit makes some decent MoBo's too..

GF2MX is a good economic choice if you plan on playing games... Not sure it's "Other" OS support is all that great tho...

NIC, 3Com or Intel.. or anything with a small price tag

DVD, you can find them reasonably cheap, prolly something around a $100... try and get a name you kinda know, off brands don't always perform as stated, not to mention aren't always very compatible..

HDD, well this is easy.. an IBM 75GXP series drive, Exceptionally Quiet and Very fast.... It's also extremely releighable...

As mentioned about a Celery or Duron would be a better choice.. though if you are in-experienced with PC's you might wanna stay away from the Athlon/Duron MoBo's, they can take a bit to setup.... it's getting easier tho as time passes...

He has two weeks though. Setup shouldn't be a problem, I've done intel systems and one athlon system.

But the thing with duron is that I'm worried thats its not stable with the first mobos.

Here goes a prive list! I worked hard on it so I hope it helps!
I have order form Buy.com but have not YET(maybe soon) ordered for the other two.
Big thing like cases and monitors usually ship by them selves so it does not matter were you buy them. You will not save on shipping much on the cases and monitor, but ordering other things together helps a lot.

Here is were you can buy a case and CONFIGURE it!!!!!! These are just some examples.

Crucial/Micron 64MB PC133 CL2 is $77.39 direct from Crucial.com.

Crucial, themselves, usually have the best prices on their own ram.

it really does not matter what the guts are, i mean, it's not going to matter since things are plenty fast.

the suggestions here are fine, there are some things that differ from person to person due to brand loyalties and taste.

but i will say this, get a case that is large but small, so a midtower, and one that is not as noisy as the others due to the nature of a dorm. and remember this system is going to be moved, and a dorm is not that big. a 19" will not do, a 17" is okay.
