Flint gets ready for Buick birthday
Hundreds of Buicks expected

Flint ? (07/21/03)-- The city of Flint is preparing to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Buick. Thousands of people are expected to arrive this week for the centennial.

Dozens of workers are preparing the grounds of the Flint Cultural Center, for the Buick Club of America's celebration of 100 years of Buick. Randy Conat will be reporting this story all week and was on site today for the preparations.

They're putting up tents and cleaning up the Cultural Center. Workers have about 48 hours before the first of 1,700 Buicks arrive for the celebration.

Workers have been out this morning, striping the parking lot behind Whiting Auditorium. Fencing is going up along the edge of the parking lot.

Thursday, Friday and Saturday are expected to bring large crowds to the Cultural Center. Two cars important to Buick's history arrived this morning.

The Marr Cyclecar, a concept car from 1914 was rolled out and a car built by Buick's chief engineer, Walter Marr, is here.

"We have 1,702 Buicks registered, vintage Buicks. That's like twice a normal Sloan Show. I would guess, given this is their 100th anniversary, we would probably see 30 to 40,000 people before this is over with," said Dennis Meyer, of the Buick Club of America.

The Buick celebration is open to the public, starting Wednesday night here in the Cultural Center. The best day for viewing will be Saturday.

At Flint's Bishop Airport starting Thursday afternoon, a Buick-built Hellcat tank destroyer, a B-24 bomber with Buick-built engines and a B-17 bomber will be on display

The best part is, most Buick owners were around for the grand opening ceremony as well!

Zing!

Oh please! I drove a Buick. A 1968 Skylark Custom 2 dr. with a modded 350 Buick V8. I really liked that car. I sold it 10 years ago. :(

I may start looking for another one.

Buick GS History
  • 1970 saw the greatest Buick GS of all time. GM finally lifted its corporate ban of engines larger than 400 cubic inches in an intermediate body and Buick responded by stuffing a brand new 455 cubic inch engine into its restyled GS. The 455 boosted more displacement, bigger valves, and a hotter cam than the 400 and was also mated to standard cold air induction through functional hood scoops. The 455's was rated at 350bhp and a stump pulling 510lb-ft of torque. This was the highest torque rating of any production engine besides Cadillac's 472 and 500 cid V-8s, and no engine achieved it at a lower rpm (2800rpm).

    0-60 in 6.5 sec, 1/4 mile in 13.8 sec @ 101 mph.
33 years ago, using a normally aspirated, automatic in a 3,460 lb. car!

Car Craft magazine tested the 1970 GS455 Stage 1 (you didn't mention the factory race car eh) and recorded a 13.38 sec 1/4 mile ET. Rated at 360 hp (big car 455 was rated at 370 hp) was very underrated. NHRA rates that engine at 425 hp.

Nope, just your run of the mill, daily driver with great air conditioning, electrics and easily obtainable, cheap replacement parts. Of course we all know it couldn't handle the 'twisties'.

Hahaha.

Actually with the Ralley (their spelling) handling package it handled very well for a GM A-body. Recent tests have put it at a factory .80 skid pad.

The GS 455 cars weighed over 3800 lbs. The stage 2 limited production (2 are proven to exist) cars were very fast.
