Buick Verano

A good friend if mine is seriously considering getting this car on Saturday and asked me to lend my advice. I've been reading reviews and drives on it and they all seem to say the same - decent car (based on the Cruze) without any power. I thought I'd ask here and see what everyone thought. I've never payed attention to Buick or this model before he brought it up to me.

What is the garage's opinion? Any test drives? What alternatives should I push him into? I prefer the Hyundai's, but thats my opinion.

Well, it has way more power than the Cruze with the 180hp 2.4L...and the 2.0T is supposedly coming for it soon.

I've driven and ridden multiple Cruzes (as a matter of fact I have one as a rental up here in Canada as we speak). While it wouldn't be my first choice in the range, I'd have no problem recommending it to someone who just wants competent A-B driving. The car is quiet, rides decently, and has all the amenities you'd want for that type fo car. I have not been in the Verano, but it should be nicer inside, even quieterr and with a lot peppier engine (180HP vs. ~140HP).

By far my biggest complaint with the Cruze is the 6spd automatic transmission...it just isn't a good transmission. If I were buying a Cruze...it would definitely be with a manual...otherwise it would be a deal breaker for me. Not sure the Verano has the same transmission since it has a very different drivetrain...so I can't comment on that directly.

Depending on the tune of the 2.0T, and if they follow through on the 6MT with it, that could be sweet.

The Cruze really doesn't feel horribly underpowered either. Not fast...but perfect adequate for the segment (especially with the 1.4T...the 1.8L is adequate but less "refined").

Have her look at:

Focus Titanium - 160HP and lots of luxury features available (Sedan or Hatchback)

Elantra Limited - heated rear leather seats

Mazda 3 GT with the SkyActiv engine

Cruze 2LT with RS package might also be a good choice

The buick will ride real nice. She may like that a lot.
