So I'm going to have 2 weeks to myself this summer before I start my job. My gf is going on a vacation, and I don't want to go because her grandpa is dying and I don't want to get in the middle of family business and togetherness...so I've been thinking what I want to do during this time.

TV seems like the best answer, and of course, spamming ATOT.

But...commercials are evil, so should I rent all the seasons of Buffy from my local videostore and watch those, or is the show really bad? I figure it's gotta be good having lasted 7 seasons.

Have you ever actually listened to the dialogue? Sounds like some middle schooler wrote it.

The first three seasons are witty, pop referential and brilliant. The remaining seasons not so much, although there are a smattering of fine standalone episodes in each.

/me agrees with Feathers & EngenZero

I tend to like Angel more these days... but of course Buffy's final eps will suck me in for sure. One of the few shows I watch on TV (well, I download to watch)

What's out on DVD is pretty dang good. The current episodes are kinda meh, but if you can appreciate campy humor you'll like the series.

If you want to rent a TV series, try the Sopranos. I think there are 3 season out now. Maybe 4. It's excellent.

I'd include season 4 (Buffy vs. Adam) and season 5 (Buffy vs. Glory) had some great episodes too.

Buffy is a series like Babylon 5 and SG-1 that (for the first 5 years) had well-plotted year-long story arcs and great foreshadowing. Minor characters were introduced in passing in year 1, only to take on major roles in years 2-3.

Like B5 and SG-1 the series is much better if you watch in sequence from season 1. If you just catch a random episode it's much less impressive because you're missing the deep backstory and ongoing character development.

In other words, highly recommended if you can watch it from the beginning.

Meh. Season 4 was where I realized that I wasn't laughing as much as I was watching. The characters were far more melodramatic, the writing was far more literal (as opposed to being brilliant twists on after-school special cliches), and everything was far more soap-opera and less organic.

Which is not to say that Fear and Hush weren't two of the most inspired hours (well, forty-two minutes) of television I've ever seen.

Definitely a series which works better in continuity than episodes, however. Like the others you mentioned, it took a while to get some momentum, though.

"Restless" was an excellent bit of writing as well, really capturing the almost-logic of dreams. "The Body"(Buffy's mom) and "Once More With Feeling" were also some of the best television writing I've seen.

Already watched all four seasons. 3 on dvd, and a kid down the hall had the fourth on vcd. Although I didn't like season 1, I liked 2-4 a lot. Watched in a week.

I figure that with more episodes, buffy will take longer, but then again, each episode is shorter and the girls are hotter.
