Someone recommende this brand of router to me. In particular, the model WHR-G54S. This thing is sold out most places (amazon was only one left) and newegg isn't listing it anymore.

Should I take it as a sign the company is discontinuing it and moving on to updated models? If so, they have this one:

Buffalo WHR-HP-G54 Wireless-G MIMO Performance Router and Access Point

I'm not even sure what MIMO means. It's used in the title of the device but not defined in the specs.

Is this a better one to get?

The WHR-HP-G54 is a better router to get & only costs a few $$ more than the WHR-G54S. It has a built in amplifier for the wireless so it gives a cleaner signal (hence the HP). I've used three of the HP's and they're all working just fine for me.

And just an FYI, Newegg has the WHR-G54S relisted as a WHR-G125. Buffalo isn't discontinuing it, they simply changed the model# but it's the same product.

Yeah, Buffalo sells the WHR-G54S in boxes marked WHR-G125.

However it is Not clear whether their Intentions are renaming or a new similar product.

It does not really matter as posted above the WHR-HP-G54 is a better Wireless router and cost just few $$ more.

OP MIMO is part of the enhancement that is going to be in 802.11n, it would provide better distance while maintaining the same level Output Radio.

Some of the netter 802.11g Wireless Router provides similar coverage without having the MIMO Antenna structure. Hence the Marketing ?hasslers? call them MIMO performance.

So if you need a Wireless Router this is currently the best choice, http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16833162134

Why?

It is very stable.

It has High Power RF Amplifier, which enhanced dramatically the distance keeping the Signal to Noise Ratio Low.

Out of the Box it can do Static DHCP, Repeater/WDS (Wireless Modes - http://www.ezlan.net/Wireless_Modes.html ).

If Flashed with DD-WRT free 3rd party firmware it can do Qos (game throttling) and much more. http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/ind...title=DD-WRT_Docu_(EN)

It's pretty clear that the new G125 line is meant to be the replacement for the old G54 one, and that Buffalo is making some claims that the new G125 line is better than the older G54 line.

So if Buffalo's saying that the G125 is new & improved, and shipping a G54 in a G125 order, something's wrong.

From http://www.buffalotech.com/pre...on-family-of-products/ Emphasis is mine:

AirStation? Wireless-G High Speed Router (WHR-G125)
The AirStation Wireless-G High Speed Router is the successor to Buffalo?s highly popular WHR-G54S model. The product combines new, improved features with the same robust performance as its predecessor such as Buffalo?s AOSS technology and 4-port 10/100 Auto-Sensing switch. Users will also benefit from an external switch which easily allows the product to change from a router to a bridge. Router Mode shares a cable or DSL connection with multiple wired or wireless devices while Bridge Access Point Mode quickly adds wireless access to an existing LAN. For added convenience, the Smart Router automatically detects and configures a cable or DSL Internet connection making set-up a quick and easy. The combination of push-button wireless, easy Internet set-up and modest pricing make this router the ideal companion for any home network.

Here's what the author of DD-WRT has to say about the G125:

http://www.dd-wrt.com/dd-wrtv2/index.php

Recently Buffalo Technologies released a new Routerproduct which will be the successor of the already pretty good WHR G54s model series. This new Router named WHR-G125 comes with a much faster CPU (240 Mhz) as well as with a new better performing Wifi Chipset. in my first tests based on a sample provided by Buffalo, this router was showing a significantly better receiving sensitivity than comparable older broadcom based routers like the Linksys WRT54G. DD-WRT does support this Router in since mid of May in our V24 release series. watch out for this new product at your local stores.
The DD-WRT Team has made a special build for this router series to support the new features of this wifi chipset, consider that this firmware is not compatible with any other Broadcom router.

Eventually I assume that there would be a G125.

Two weeks ago I ordered a G125. I got a new box marked outside as G125, but inside there was a G54S.

Knowing how to industry operates I assume that they were out of boxes so someone ordered new boxes but has old stock of G54S so they just boxed the G54S in the new boxes.

Since I needed a Router and the G54S is good for whatever I needed to do I installed it and forgot about it.

However this is just one more example of the disrespect practiced toward the End-users by the Wireless industry..

As an Example Buffalo did not release Vista drivers to any of their 802.11g Wireless card.

They released Drivers for their expensive bellow mediocre performer of their Nfiniti preN line, and seems to ignore the other lines.

The situation just emphasizes what I claimed many times, there is No one responsible Brand that one can count on, there are only few good models dispersed here and there among the name Brand.

In case of Buffalo the two 802.11g Routers are good products the compatible 802.11g Wireless card are good too as long as you never have to use them with Vista.

For everything else look elsewhere.

Now - 70 days on the last post =~ 8 years worth of Vista driver development in internet-time! (and 12 for the bugs that go along with it! Zing!!!)

On a serious note, what's the chipset on those, Atheros?

Broadcom BCM5352 Chipset.

Yeah, in the two month that past since the thread was active they finally posted drivers for Vista.

So, they lost some of my business since I bought at this time other cards that support Vista.

There was No reason not to release the drivers early. My guess is the ?Geniuses? in marketing fell that this is a way to push people to buy the Lame nfiniti line.

Smart very smart.:shocked::thumbsdown::shocked:
