buffered vs Unbuffered ram?

What's the difference ? Looking to purchase one for my Desktop.

Most desktops only take unbuffered (standard/normal) ram.

Special types, such as registered ECC (which means it is buffered as well), is usually ONLY for servers and high end workstation motherboards. Most often, this type will NOT work in a normal desktop motherboard.

Servers like buffered (registered ECC) ram, because the buffers allow huge amounts of memory to be fitted to the server. (Buffer = built in tiny high speed electrical amplifiers).

If this is something you have seen for sale on ebay (ECC and/or registered and/or buffered), it is probably the WRONG type of ram for your computer and will NOT work. (with rare exceptions).
