Hi. I am a real newbie here and want to thank everyone who made this wonderful site possible.
I used to have a Netgear RP614 router and a Netgear WGT624 wireless router, which I used as a switch/AP by disabling DHCP server. In the meantime, I read wonderful functionality of dd-wrt-capable routers and decided to replace the Netgears with Buffalo WHR-HP-G54. I successfully updated the firmware with dd-wrt v23 sp2 and now I can log in to the setup page at 192.168.1.1 with my labtop computer, which I isolated from the home network for setop purpose. To give you better idea, my ISP is Shaw in Canada, and cable modem is Motorola Surfboard 5101.
After updating firmwares of those two Buffalos, firstly I tried to replace the Netgear RP624, which I used to use to handle network equipment on the first floor, with a Buffalo without modifying any of the option at setup. It did not work. IP was 192.168.1.xxx, subnet mask was 255.255.255.0, default gateway was 192.168.1.1, but connection-specific DNS suffix was blank. No internet was there. I came to this site and read and read and found MAC issue, and then I did MAC address cloning by copying and entering the Netgear RP614's WAN port MAC address manually. It did work. Now I can login 192.168.1.1 from my computer on the second floor.
After replacing router with a Buffalo, I tried to replace the Netgear WGT624 with the other Buffalo. Using my labtop, which is not in the network yet, I disabled Internet connection, assigned WAN port to switch, disabled DHCP server function, and finally changed its IP address to 192.168.1.100 to prevent from IP duplication with 192.168.1.1 which is my Buffalo router in basement. Before putting it in the, I confirmed what I did properly, closed the setup page, and was able to login to the Buffalo switch/AP now at 192.168.1.100. Then, I replaced it with the Netgear WGT624. It does not work. No internet signal. I could see the SSID, but no address assigned. I cannot ping 192.168.1.1 and 192.168.1.100 either. I think, basically, the switch/AP is gone. So, I pulled it out from the home network, hooked it up with my labtop again, tried 192.168.1.100, but it was not successful either. Lower-right-handside network icon says limited network connection. I tried to reair it by ipconfig /renew, but did not work.
Is there anything I missed so far? I think I followed every bit of it. I really don't know what's wrong. Can enyone help me?
Thanks.
Brian
