i want to upgrade to 1gb of memory, but havent decided on the speed i want. right now, i have an athlon xp 1800+, and would like to buy PC3500 or 3700 ram, because i plan on upgrading my processor in the near future. looking at newegg, i found this. i havent heard of the brand before, and am wondering what you think of it. i've heard from somewhere that it is big in japan, dont know if that means anything.

thanks for the help

Winbond usually are associated with good memory chips. That Buffalo is Winbond on a Buffalo PCB, which is pretty nice (the Winbond) not sure how good Buffalo are, but I haven't heard anything about Buffalo (bad or good)

I'm using a 512mb stick of Buffalo PC3200. As far as I can tell, it's just a re-labelled Winbond.

Buffalo is reputable. I have never heard anyone complain about them and have heard plenty of people rave about them (mainly AMD users).

Buffalo is like Corsair, except they dont have fancy useless memory heatsinks to draw in customers. They actually know where to cut costs.

my next question would be will faster memory run on my motherboard? i have an epox 8kha+, and i am not sure if it supports speeds faster than 2100. from what i saw on their website, it says "3 slots for PC2100" does that mean it will just run at that speed until i get a new mobo and processor, or will it not work at all?

I wouldn't go that far.

Well then here's your first. I bought a stick of Buffalo RAM, with the Windbond chips from Newegg - 256MB, PC3200. Maybe 1 our of 10 reboots will be successful at 200MHz. Most of the time, the board (Epox 8RDA+) will simply start beeping (POST code C1) during POST, and continue that until I power down the system. It would only POST below 200MHz, even at 2.9V. This was WITH the VDD mod for the chipset, so that wasn't the culprit. I tried it in another system - same thing. This stick of "PC3200" wouldn't do 200MHz. I wasn't able to read the SPD data off of it; the utility I tried (AIDA32) could not read any SPD info off of it, as though it wasn't there at all.
For the record, I'm using Geil's Value stuff, PC3200, in both of my 8RDA+ PC's, at rated speed, dual channel, and all's working just fine.

I have some OCZ PC3500EL, supposed to do 434ddr at 2-3-3-6 but craps out around 370ddr at 2.5-3-3-8! I would have been better off picking up some Generic PC3200 over this $150 stick of trash. Needless to say, I have purchased my first and last OCZ product. With that said, some have had good luck with the brand.

I have since replaced the OCZ in my main system with a TwinMOS Winbond 512mb module, and memory instability is a thing of the past for me.

It should still work in there. You might not be able to run higher speeds if the board can't handle it, but it will run at PC2100. I ran a stick of Corsair PC3200 in my P4B533-e with 845E chipset board (with "official" support for PC2100 only) just fine at PC3200+ speeds.

What about all the people that are now bowing down to OCZ as 'da bomb that were here when all the crap was going on? It's funny how soon people forget.

believe, i know the crap they pulled with OCing their ram and what not but it seems to me they really cleaned up their act with the pc3500 EL and the pc 3700 EL. i hear the pc3700 can even run at pc4000

I was there then, I am here now. OCZ's high end product is just as good, if not better than other brands' high end product. Their Gold line is simply amazing when using Springdale/Canterwood.

I have some Buffalo PC3700 with Winbond BH-5 chips. They do the job. That's all that matters.

Yeah, the BuffaloTech with Winbond BH-5 chips MemoryX.com was selling were the same chips Crucial was putting in their PC3700 line. They were only like $90 or so for a 512MB stick too.

Search the AT archives for "OCZ" or "Mr Natural" . I think it was about one year to a year and a half ago that the sh*t really hit the fan. Go to the Mad Onion forums and search there too, if they haven't pulled all the OCZ posts you're in for quite an interesting read.
