Snatch one fast, these will run out soon. My order shipped today from Tennessee, even though I live in California. I guess the CA warehouse had none?

I had purchased the previous time they were in stock last week, on Friday. I guess the TN warehouse got them before the CA one did. Which kinda sucks because they would be here today if I had ordered from them 3 days later on Monday, but now they're expected to come on Thursday.

Ya, some RAM makers and industry people are predicting a big Vista bloom in Q3 and Q4 which will drive RAM prices up for sure. I still think there's a bit of room for prices to drop though before that. Intel's new line-up, Bearlake chipset and price cuts at the end of April may be the sweet spot to buy. Pretty sure they're releasing 1333FSB versions of Conroe (Bearlake supports 1333 also) but not 100% sure. In any case, typically faster CPU standards force RAM makers to produce faster modules for "OC'ing Headroom", which in turn drops the price on lower-spec'd modules.

Yeah, it sounds reasonable and I've heard that.......but if you wait for a price to drop over and over, you'll just wait forever. Sort of like waiting for the next "big thing", only to have another shoe drop a week after the "big thing" releases.

Sometimes, you just have to suck it up and pay the price........but at least we were paying a lot less than those that bought in December and January. :)

I like to think of it in the same terms as investing, or nowadays, buying gasoline too. :|

You gotta dollar-cost-average. Buy 2GB now and pick up another 2GB later if it drops significantly, which I agree seems unlikely. Nextag is a sucky price search engine but it does have a nice price-trending feature that is especially useful for things like RAM. 2GB of DDR2 PC-6400 Crucial Ballistix, for example, are at/near 12mo. low at around $250. Which is exactly what you can get them for right now, after rebate.

yeah, just grab them and run... have fun overclocking while seeing the price went up, these ram have good investment value. Won't lose much money after 1-2 years, unlike video cards that cost 500 today only worth 100 after 2 years.

Ok, I recieved them too, but how do you guys open the heat spreader? I tried to pry open the clams but they won't budge, do I have to try harder or what? I'm just affaid that I would break it. Is there a trick to this? Thanks

This is how I got the spreaders off......I started at the upper edge of the RAM and slipped a very small jeweler's screwdriver under the silver clamp at the top edge. There's a gap along the top edge that'll let you get under it. I just worked the clamp up and off the RAM using the driver.

Then I used my thumbnail and slid it under one end of the heatspreader and pried up until the tape just began to lift......then moved to the other end and did the same.

I worked back and forth just lifting the spreader up a hair at a time from one end then the other.....eventually the tape gave and the spreader came off, tape intact and no chips disturbed at all. I hadn't installed the RAM yet, so the tape hadn't had time to heat and seal better.

But I paid careful attention to what was going on under the tape.....if at any time I felt that something untoward was happening, I was prepared to just press it all back together, put the silver clamps back on and install the RAM.

Pffft...in 2 years DDR3 will be th standard and these won't be worth anything.

Right, because good DDR isn't worth anything now.

I sold my DDR kit for 90% value of how much i paid for them 1.5 years ago. so it mean the depreciation of DDR isn't bad at all. of course 2 years later when DDR3 are standards, DDR2 is dramatically reduce in stock, but not that much in price.

I sold my 2gb kit of g.skill pc4000 HZ DDR for 170% of my purchasing price from 1.5 years ago (bought it for $130 shipped new on Ebay back when memory was dirt cheap, then I sold it on Ebay last week for $220+shipping)

Thanks,

supposedly all of this memory from the 2007 batch is made with Micron D9 chips.

Is anyone else seeing this ram as 667Mhz in CPU-Z? Someone posted this issue on Newegg and I'm seeing the same thing.

You might need to change your settings in the BIOS if it doesn't default to SPD timings.

Oh and Lukeman and anyone else who PM'd me about my sticks, pretty sure most of you got yours when these came back in stock, but I ended up keeping mine anyways along with the Crucial. Wanted to go to 4GB anyways and couldn't unload the Ballistix with all of these RAM deals going on!

I got mine the last time they came in stock, but since then I have acquired way too much ram. (damn the ATHD forum!!!!)
If anyone has missed out and you want 'em, pm me. I haven't even had the chance to open them.

I don't know if anyone else is having problems with newegg, but I don't see the same service that I used to. My order has been on step 3 of their order process for two days and they don't respond to any of my emails. They sure charged my credit card within minutes of placing the order though.

Just placed an order. The Corsairs seem to have much more reviews and are rated at 4-4-4-12 for about the same price but since everyone here is going crazy about the Buffolos I went with that. I figured I couldn't go wrong either way.

Well, I just am revisiting this thread after an absence from it....over 5000 views. Dang!

I'm still running the Firestix and they're right at 900MHz memory speed.....so they do indeed overclock pretty well for the price.

But the general consensus is:

The Firestix are great performers for the price!!!

Seems a lot of people criticizing the RAM just don't get it..........sure, you can easily find Micron D9 IC'd RAM that will overclock with as good or better timings than the Firestix, but you'll end up spending upwards of $300 or more to get there. Personally, $180 is a great price for what I am getting out of them.

Now, if I ever feel like becoming an Uber Overclocker and trying for world records....then I'll glady spend $375 and by some Cellshock (D9GKX) DDR1000, or some OCZ Titanium Alphas, or mushkin eXtreme Performance DDR1066, or some Corsair Dominator XMS 1066 or better........but again, all run $300 and up for the same 2GB of memory I spend $180 for. And honestly, outside benchmarks (which really I don't sit all day and run).....in the real world, I'd hesitate to believe the average user or even most power users would really be able to tell much of a difference between these and those.

Of course, you lose bragging rights.......but I don't show off my system like that. I try for best value for my money and at the time.....and probably even today, these fit that criterion quite well.

:)
