If this thing took SATA drives, I'd be all over it (after I sold the 250GB drives and put in my 400GB)

If anything this is a fair deal. Yeah it's cheaper than ever before but these types of devices are going to become more common and thus... cheaper. Maxtor is coming out with a dual-disc "one-touch" external NAS or whatever. However I would jump at this if I had $800 to blow, best deal I've seen for something like this.

I have 4 Western Dig 250GB drives ($89 + tax each from Frys) in an old Dell SC400 (paid~ $250 for it new), WinXP from Microsoft Partner subscription (nearly free) ... other than SIZE (admittedly a BIG diff) and no raid (could get raid card ~ $100) got my 1 TB with a giga NIC card to boot just over $600.

Rather attractive unit, though I wonder about the warranty offered on the unit and drives. 1 Year is not enough.

Yes, thats the kicker. I'm really thinking of building something similar soon, ~3->5 200+ GB SATA drives in an old dual p3-800 or p3 1 GHZ system with an SATA card, linux and software RAID. I'd buy this in a second if I had the money though.

[edit] - It's only ~700 GB after formatting & RAID5. Dammit!

thats a pro/con of raid 5 tho, not the Buffalo unit. I just put together a 1 TB SATA server using 4 x SATA drives and an old p3 for roughly the same price. I'm still setting up linux for it. This is great for the price and if u want something simple and relatively easy to use. And what's this about adding more drives using the USB ports? hrm...
how about a review? http://www.tomsnetworking.com/Reviews-200-ProdID-TERASTA.php

edit: to fix link

I show $829 after rebate for Outpost. Don't forget that Buy.com almost always has coupons floating around too.

Let see, I got two 300GB hard drive on sale, put them in USB3 enclosures and used D-Link Entry Level DNS-120 (http://www.ezlan.net/nas.html )

So right now, I have 600GB that cost me less than $300.
