Budget Video Cards - Which to get?

OK. Here's the situation. My Voodoo5 can't run some of the current games I am playing (read JK2). Well it can, it's just that flashing textures hurt my eyes after 5 or 6 seconds. I have a small budget because I am upgrading later in the year and don't want a blowout on this purchase. I've got $300 AU to spend and this is the list as I can see it.

Hercules Prophet 4500 64mb - $291
Leadtek A170 MX440 - $279
ATI Radeon 7500 - $302.50

The Hercules Radeon 8500 LE is $374, and probably a little to pricey for what I want to spend.

At the moment I am kinda leaning towards the KyroII card. I'm not really sure though, as I haven't found much in the way of comparisons of the GF4MX and the KyroII. Any help would be great.

Thanks in advance.

I'd recommend a GF2 Titanium, I pick mine up for £88 and it plays MOH:AA, RTCW in 1152x864x32 max settings with ease.

kyroII is good in FPS games but in games like Max Payne and games with T&L it's falls apart badly, the GF2 Ti is equivelant to a GF4 MX440 and beats thats in most benchmarks.

If you are just considering from the three cards listed, go with the GF4 MX440 cause it's the most future proof card there with drivers that are stable and more to come in the future. If you can, go with the GF2 Ti or the GF2 Pro cards, they are good options as well.

OK, thanks for the suggestions. I can get a Leadtek GF2 TI for $258. But the MX440 looks like the better buy. Better TV out, IDCT transformation etc.

So unless anyone else has any ideas as to what I will get, I'm going for the MX440

<< wait for the geforce 4 ti 4200. it might be a while, but it'll be worth the wait, guaranteed. >>

I second this suggestion. I've been playing JK2 for the past few days (excellent game), and it does not run very well with 32bit color on my 1GHz/GF2/512Meg machine. I have to set it to 16bit color for acceptable performance and it is butt ugly. Since you're playing JK2 now, and need a vid card now, I would recommend the GF3 Ti200. It's going for $112US (I don't know how that translates to AU$, but for comparison's sake the GF4 MX440 is going for $80US) and it will offer very nice performance at beautiful settings with JK2.

edit- on second thought, the Ti4200 might not be a good candidate if your budget is less than $150US. The Ti4200 is debuting at $170 ±20 and will drop a few weeks later to about $150 (in US $). I still recommend the GF3 Ti200 though, it's more futureproof than the GF4 MX cards.

Thanks for the replies. I may see if I can hold out a bit longer (managed to get JK2 in a mostly working state). As for a Ti200, they are over $400 AU, so no luck at the moment. If I hold out for a Ti4200 I will probably have more money to spend so it's likely I will be able to afford one. I think I'll play the waiting game and see if I can't snap up a Ti4200, especially after seeing how well they perform 🙂

I have a GeForce 2 Ti i got it for $92 US shipped I love the thing it over clocks good too. I definatly recommend it.

And you consider a $250-300 Vid card a "budget" card??????
How about something in the "less than" $50 range???
Like the SiS315 chipset...........Greg
