Budget Upgrade (Intel Pentium D 805)

I'm considering a budget upgrade right now and the Pentium D 805 seems to be the best bang for buck processor on the market right now. I plan to overclock this processor to as far as i can get it stable on air. Is this a good upgrade choice from my AMD Sempron 2200+ @ 1.5GHz (Overclocked: 2500+ @ 1.8GHz)? Or is there another processor i should be looking at? Dual Core is a must for me right now.


This is what i'm planning to start with (more upgrades to be done after):

Intel Pentium D 805 Smithfield 533MHz FSB LGA 775 Dual Core, EM64T Processor
ASRock 775Dual-VSTA Socket T (LGA 775) VIA PT880 PRO ATX Intel Motherboard
ARCTIC COOLING Freezer 7 Pro CPU Cooler
SILVERSTONE RL-FM81 80mm 2 Ball Case Cooling Fan With Control Panel

Seriously, if you could just hold off for a few more weeks, there will be even more better deals on the market.

I'm aiming at about 3 weeks from now. That's about 1 week after Conroe is officially released.
My budget is very limited though. I might be able to afford the cheapest Conroe but that would push me further back.

X2 3800+ at ~$150 will be a better buy.

What do you mean, "Push you further back"??

Set me back further meaning that it will cost me more and my purchase date will also be set back.

X2 3800+ = US$297 (i can't afford that)

If you wait, there are price drops that are going to take place in conjunction with the release of Conroe.

Seriously though, you will get more for you buck if you wait until Conroe is officially on the market. Then, even if you do not get Conroe, you'll have more options for other dual core CPU's since Intel is releasing other dual core chips on their Pentium D line, such as the 945, etc..

The X2 3800+ is $300 right now but as soon as Conroe hits it will down drastically. I believe that people are saying it will be around $150 which would be much cheaper than you having to switch over to an Intel rig.

i can understand that but i'd have to buy a new motherboard anyway (mine is a Socket A mobo).

If you want to OC at all, forget that. The assrock boards are crappy OC'ers., I have one (not this one, but an asrock, they are all bad)

And if you got one of the 939 X2's at ~150-170, you could re-use your 768 meg of DDR.

And the 805 requires a minimum of a $40 or $50 HSF unless you go stock, in which case, your socket A would be faster, except multi-threaded apps. The 805 is hot, slow, and requires a big HSF, big PSU, and exspensive motherboard to get a good OC.

Get the X2 in a week.

here's the deal...

i was traditionally an intel person, only reason i have an amd is because my dad bought me the comp for my b'day but he didn't really know much about them. anyway, no complaintsm, it runs fine. now i wanna upgrade and possibly go back to intel. i want the best i can get within my small budget (i don't work, i have to save). GFX: i got my first graphics card for the above mentioned system it was an MSI Geforce MX4000 (128MB). Sold that and bought myself a Leadtek GeForce 6600 GT (128MB - still AGP).
so i like Nvidia. switching allegiance is always a big decision for people and i'm no exception. so...for a processor...either way would work (but i'm still leaning to intel even though they let ppl down with gaming (i'm a gamer)). gfx...i'm nvidia...for me to switch i'd have to get some good proof that its worth it.
