Budget System Build

I'm planning on building a budget computer for my kids with spare components. Here's what I have: Diamond Viper V770 video card, AudioEnsoniq PCI sound card, 10 Gig Maxtor 7200 rpm HD, Prime Peripherals 50x CD-ROM, 128 meg PC133 memory, Rockwell 56k modem, Teac floppy drive, and a Celeron 300A CPU.

Should I buy a slot 1 motherboard and build my system around the 300A or scrap the 300A and buy a new cpu? The cpu does 450 @ core voltage.

If I scrap the 300A, what cpu/mother board should I get?

eww celeron....if you want cheap get a low speed Duron and a KT133A mobo (Abit, Asus, MSI, IWill are all good brands)

I second that; sell your 300A and pick up a cheap KT133 or KT133E based motherboard with a $50 Duron.

Fry's had a deal not too long ago; a retail Duron 800 and a retail FIC AZ11 for $99.

Thanks. What Duron is best for overclocking? Which motherboards have voltage adjustment in the BIOS?

By the way, does the 300A have any value?

They go for ~$35 if it does 450.

Look for ABIT's KT133E mobo, MSI's K7Turbo, and Epox's 8KTA3; they all should be sub-$100.

Almost all Durons will go to ~1050 tops. That is with good air cooling. Get whatever is cheapest really.

Seriously. $40 for a Duron 750 and $79 for a Biostar M7VKB motherboard.

How can you go wrong?

Sell the Celeron and move on! 😉
