Budget priced card to upgrade Geforce4 Ti4200 64mb?

I have the upgrade itch. I currently have the Geforce Ti4200 with 64mb, my cpu is 2ghz and I have 1gb of ram so I think I am ok there. I think the card is the weakest link at the moment. Is there a card out there under $200 is would be worth upgrading to? With so many different ones these days I am not sure what mine even compares to anymore.

Thanks for the reply, there is one for like $169 at pricewatch I see. I will get a few more opinions and go from there.

Try to get one of the bfg5900's. They should by like $160 or something, and they usually overclock to 5950 speeds.

Your current video card is good for most games available now, is there a specific game you are upgrading for ?

I am starting to get some choppiness for the first time in awhile. Games such as Lock-on and Gothic 2 at higher resolutions. With a 2ghz cpu and 1 gb of ram I figure the weak spot is the 64mb video card. The motivation to upgrade is my wife's video card just crapped out, so instead of buying her another cheap one I will upgrade mine and give her the Ti4200.
I went ahead and ordered the BFG 5900 from GameVE for $169 with shipping.

A company...but not only that, a company that was formed by part of what once was VisionTek, and seems to have gotten the good bits of VisionTek, including good cards and good service. If I were buying an NVidia card before next year's FXs come out, I'd have to decide between them, Leadtek or Abit; and would probably end up going with BFG, as I have yet to hear any product (sure, everyone has bad cards, but you know, the ones that just make you pull your hair out) or, and more importantly, customer service horror stories, and have heard quite good stuff about their customer service, actually.

AcesHardware recently posted a Gamer's Upgrade Guide for almost your exact system (XP 2100+ & 4200 to a faster CPU, a faster GPU, and a faster both). Check it out for some tips.

Let me add that BFG currently has a LIFETIME warranty on this card. Can't beat that.

Yeah, like any of us will actually keep a video card for more than 3 years.😎

Yup.. I couldn't agree more. After just trying to get a hold of PNY to RMA a card, I will never buy a PNY card again. I finally got through to a customer service que after yelling at the voice system at PNY and had to leave a message. They ended up calling me two days later after 9 pm and it came up as "unknown" on my caller id, so I ignored it. Some guy with an accent that I couldn't understand said that he was calling me back and then told me to call the PNY telephone number if I needed any other help. ARRrrrgggh!! Not only that, but if you read their "limited lifetime" warranty, they will only replace your card with something that they feel is suitable once your card is no longer made. From what I've heard, they trade you down card models, so what good is that?

BFG is a much smaller company trying to build a reputation. Their support and warranty is awesome. If I were buying an nVidia card, I would buy a BFG. Actually, I just sold a T4600 on the FS/FT forums because I bought a ATI 9800PRO. It was a BFG card.

You never think about warranty and support until you need it and then when you need it, you find out quickly who you want to deal with and who you don't want to deal with. Your priorities quickly change from then on when you're looking for a piece of hardware.

None...also I've worked on two PCs where the end problem ended up being a PNY Geforce3 and Geforce4 card. I got nothing from their service, and the problems never pointed to the video card...but replace it and all was fin--same probs if used in another PC as well. My father has had two similar experiences as well. Their Quadros are obviously good, but if I were doing real 3D work, I wouldn't flinch at getting a FireGL just so as not to give Quadro my money.

I haven't bought or used any BFG cards, but as I said...everyone at the forums, and a few people I actually know who've gotten them have all been very happy with them, including actual customer support. If I build a machine soon for even a casual gamer, that 5900 is probably going in it.

Yeah, when you're dealing with <$50 mobos, you can deal with that--not with $200 video cards.

You guys can joke about the warranty all you want, but when something happens to your card after the 30-90 day, or 1 year warranty runs out you would be crying. I'll take the lifetime warranty with a smile🙂
