Aren't there good combo deals on fry's? You could go for something like a Gigabyte 965 DS3 with an e4300 and overclock it a little on stock. It should be less than 200

I'd go with an E2160 and a Gigabyte 965p-S3 combo myself with that price range. Got the mobo with an E4400 cpu and it works great.

Sometime newegg has combo of Brisbane and this board for ~$110. Maybe newegg will have some more combo specials.

Yep, if you want to O/C, this will dominate anything else in the price range with ease. That 2160 keeps pace with the hugely expensive X6800 for 1/8 to 1/10 the price :) Add in drop-in Quad-core upgrade path, and you're set.

I have a 3600 + brisbane at work. That thing is great! Of course, I probably won't feel like in 18 mos... I got an open box mobo and gpu when I upgraded my cousin's comp in jan (Open Box: MSI 975X Platinum V.2 LGA 775 Intel 975X ATX Intel Motherboard - OEM, and Open Box: MSI RX1900 CrossFire Radeon X1900 CrossFire Edition 512MB GDDR3 PCI Express x16 Video Card - OEM) and had great success getting better components than I was originally looking at for a lower price.

That Brisbane 3600 and the Biostar 550 is a great combo. Some people have it overclocked to 3 GHz. On the average you should be able to get 2.8 GHz out of it. Not bad at all for less than $120 cpu/mobo combo @ 2.8GHz (overclocked). Later on you can upgrade the CPU to the new phenom quad core, and yet, after that change the motherboard to AM2+ (with HT3).
A gradual upgrade that will last you 2-3 years @ minimum cost.
Good luck with it.

ya that was kinda the plan the gradual upgrade.... I just ordered everything for the mobo, cpu, and graphics card for $267. not to shabby if you ask me.

This $91 E2160

and

this $62 mobo

will give you a cheap and fast system which will let you re-use older parts like AGP or DDR or you can use newer PCI-E and DDR2 stuff. Very nice and easy to use motherboard.

If you want dual-core I would suggest this E4300 for $114 with the same $62 mobo from above.

Both the E2160 and the E4300 with the ASRock DualVSTA board will get you around 2.7GHz overclocked and if you want to step up a little more the E4400(for $138/$139) will net you around 3.0GHz.

Asrock always comes up w/ some crazy idea. I didnt know the board can function w/ both DDR and DDR2. I dont think so. Maybe just one type depending what cpu you get.
still it is ~$50 more , lesser performance than Brisbane and not a good upgrade path (DDR2 553, no quad core?). The AM2 is much better choice as far as budget, performance and upgrade path.

so im pretty much an idoit... The hd that i have are not SATA. the biostar only has one PATA slot so i cant plug in my hds and my cd/dvd roms at the same time. pretty weaksauce. Also what is a good aftermarket heat sink for the cpu. thanks

This one has the best cooling/$$, of the ones that can handle a dual-core @ 2.8 Ghz & above: Scythe Ninja B. It can also be easily used with LGA 775, which is a huge plus to me. This one doesn't cool dual-cores nearly as well, but it's cheaper: AC Freezer 64 Pro. The AC Freezer also is extremely easy to mount, which is never a bad thing, I guess.

1 PATA IDE channel = connections for 2 devices i.e. 1 HDD and 1 optical drive. That should be all you need to set up this system and get it running.
