Budget Motherboard

I'm looking for a good budget motherboard to help a friend out. I really like the board I put into my brothers machine, DFI NF4 Ultra, but he won't have a 24-pin PS needed for that board. So here are some reqs,

* 20-pin PS connector
* Diagnostic LED's
* NF4 or equivilant
* On-board Sound

Thanks for any help.

I just popped in an nf4 Ultra-D w/ a very old Enermax 651 20 pin psu (didn't even have the P4 4 pin connector, so I grabbed a molex>4pin converter, but has alot of juice on all the rails) and had no problems what so ever. Food for thought.

Did you notice the top thread in this forum? The only sticky? Did you read the very first sentence of that thread?
:roll:

(Q) the new "xyx" motherboard has a 24pin plug - so do i need a new 24pin PSU ?

Not necessarely. All the upcoming new boards (eg. Nforce 4) SHOULD be capable of running with an "old" ATX 1.3 20pin-plug equipped PSU as well as with a new ATX 2.0 24pin PSU.

The question here is rather whether the PSU itself is a good brand name PSU with sufficient wattage. Dont expect a recent high-end system with pci-express card(s) and A64 CPU to run flawlessly off an old 350W noname PSU.

What's his current PSU? Does it have a strong 12V rail? Does it have two 12V rails? Does it have a 4-pin connector? There's a good chance that he should just get a new PSU.

To answer your question, though, I don't think there are any NF4 boards with 20-pin connectors.

I've seen that and I've been a part of that when I was building my brothers comp with the Nforce4. The PS is going to be the Antec 380S that comes with the Sonota case. While I've read that it is possible to use the 2 together, this is for a computer I will not be close to often and don't want to take the chance with "service calls". I may end up going that route simply because it's an great mobo, but I'm asking if there are any alternatives as well.

EDIT: I guess this question should die, looks like all NF4 boards have 24-pin PS connectors. So it's something I'm going to run into no matter what board I pick.

Apparently Sonatas now have 24A on the 12V rail. I don't think you'll have any problems, and that PSU does have the extra 4-pin connector.

I'd just get the motherboard you want and plug it in. It should work fine. If not, you can get an adapter for your PSU or for your PCI-E card.

What video card is he getting? As the PSU thread says, those extra pins are for a PCI-E video card.

If you really want to be careful, you could just get a Socket 939 AGP board, like the EPoX NF3 Ultra board. It has a 20-pin connector:

I just did a build with a MSI K8N Neo4-, an Antec 430 watt 20-pin PSU, and a 6600GT. It works great. :thumbsup:

Edit: The board has an optional LED diagnostic module that you can add, but it doesn't come with the board.

im quoting from dfi. dfi recommends native 24 pin. no adapter. just get a 24 pin power supply cheaper then getting a whole new board most likely lol.
