How much would a low end laptop end up going for?

Basically looking for it for the follow things...

Word processing while on the go
Dumping flash card from camera

So, basically, I'm looking for some good suggustions for a brand/model/whatever... I'd prefer for it to not be horribly slow, but I am on a budget (around a grand is my spending cap). Thanks.

If you have no plans for gaming or video editing, then any older system would be fine. I would look for something like 2-3 year old P3 model with a decent 14 or 15" screen. The screen to me would be far more of an issue than the processor itself.

Dude, have you looked at Dell? (sorry had to say it) Check out the Insipron 2650 and 2650C. Also check out the Hot Deals forums, if you're willing to put up with rebates and other forms of deal engineering that can be a worthwhile process.

the dell 2650c is currently 595 + tax no rebates. thats definitely good enough, though i'd get more than 128mb ram, and maybe a dvd.

How about this?

At just 2.9 lbs, the $799 Lindows Mobile PC is a featherweight, but it weighs in with such features as LindowsOS, a 933mhz VIA processor, 256MB RAM, USB 2.0, Firewire, Ethernet, and a crisp 12.1" TFT display, plus a PCMCIA slot to add even more functionality such as wireless networking.

just go ibook. new tech, reliable least likely to give you pain. don't buy refurb laptop, components wear out and ur screwed. don't go too cheap, p2's are too slow.
