My Friend is out hunting for a laptop. He is willing to spend 1000$ ...what do you think is his best option...

His only minimum requirement is a P4 processor...

Desktop replacement primarily...

battery life is not too much of an issue.

as far as size... its just that 5100/1100 is just too big...nything smaller would be better...

Ok let's try this again. What does he use his desktop for?

He will use for internet, word processing, college work and some gaming,

He will have a wall socket nearby, but a minimum of 2 hrs of battery life is a requirement.

Compaq Presario 2100z as BTO (Athlon XP-M). I have one and so far a great machine.

If he wants a stock configuration, the Presario 2172US fits the bill perfectly.... (Athlon XP-M 2500+, 40 GB HD, CD-RW/DVD combo, 15" XGA LCD, 256 MB RAM)

Your friend wants a desktop replacement for $1,000?

I think they should increase their budget to a more realistic $1,500 and get a Dell Inspiron 8500/8600 or IBM ThinkPad A series.

1) I would check out the laptop Hot Deals in particular the Dell 5100 or Compaq laptops. The Dell 1100 is an ENTRY LEVEL laptop, not a desktop replacement.

2) UltraWide has an excellent suggestion, buy an older but NEW IBM ThinkPad laptop direct from IBM's eBay store. Get either an R series or A series.

Thank you dnuggett, if you carefully re-read my entire post I did mention the 5100.

Although if I wanted a true desktop replacement I'd go for the Dell 8500, or 8600 (Centrino) ... upgrade RAM to 512MB RAM, upgrade to a 40GB 5400 or 7200RPM hard drive, decent graphics card, etc. The beast should weigh around 8 pounds but it will be a true desktop replacement.

well, you could get a inspiron 600m.
it isnt a real desktop replacement, but it weighs around 4-6 pounds i think.
comes with a pentium-m processor and the graphics card is pretty good too, but not the best. (Mobility Radeon 9000)
if you configured it carefully, it might come down to around $1000.
I still recommend the 5150/5100 though. Its a great deal performance vs pricewise.

Right now xpbargains.com has a good deal for the Dell 5100.

w/ P4-2.66GHz, 14.1" XGA screen, 256MB DDR, free 40GB upgrade, DVD, 32MB ATi Mobility Radeon 7500, Modem, NIC, XP Home for $1049 - $25 dell coupon code - $150 rebate = $874 w/ free shipping.

You can probably add a DVD/CD-RW combo drive and still be under $1000.

i got a hp with a 2500 athlonxp-m, 40 gig, 15" screen, dvd-cdrw, builtin wirless.g, lan, modem, winxp home for 1100 after rebate, battery lasts 3 to 3.5 hours

Actually, I have a 8600. It weighs 7.2 lbs loaded. The stock 4200 rpm HDD is about faster than most desktop 5400 rpm drives (especially older ones). Most people snicker at the 4200 rpm speed, but its far faster than the ancient desktop 4200 rpm drives that were on the market years ago.

Ok.. well that's kind of a meaningless opinion unless you have some relevancy to back up it up... let us know what you mean.

Dnuggett.... All i wanted to ask was, that coz RossMan said getting a desktop replacement for a 1000$ is a bad idea (Your friend wants a desktop replacement for $1,000?).. i was confirming if the 5100 would be classified as a desktop replacement... because it IS available for around $1000.

Personally I do not classify the 5100 as a true desktop replacement.

However it is more suited as a desktop replacement than a 1100 is.

I would add an extra $200 and get either of these:

Exp 11/5. Dell Home has Up to free Shipping + Up to $250 Rebate + Up to 60GB free Hard Drive Upgrade on select notebooks. no tax for most states.

Better yet, right now save more w/ $25 off $500+ coupon code on any systems: , exp 2/29/04

Inspiron 8500 Notebook w/ P4-2.2GHz-M, 15.4" WXGA display, 256MB DDR, 32MB ATI mobility Radeon 9000, Free 60GB upgrade, DVD, USB2.0, Firewire, Modem, NIC, XP Home, 1yr warranty for $1499 - $25 dell coupon code - $250 rebate = $1224 w/ free shipping. Add to cart and apply the coupon code.

Wide Aspect Display on the Inspiron 8500. 20% larger than 15.1". WXGA (1280x800), WSXGA+ (1680x1050), or WUXGA (1920x1200).

Inspiron 8600 Notebook w/ PentiumM-1.3GHz, 15.4" WXGA screen, 512MB DDR, 40GB, 32MB Radeon 9000, DVD/CDRW combo, 802.11b wireless LAN, Modem, NIC, XP Home for $1599 - $350 instant discount - $50 dell coupon = $1199.
