Budget Laptop for under $1000

I am looking for a budget laptop for under $1000 or lower. This is a gift. The primary user will use it for word processing, spreadsheet, email, internet serving, powerpoint, and some minor image manipulation. Keep in mind that this person feels her Pentium III laptop is usable! I dont' think high horse power is necessary.

Here's the prices I got from my corporate discount:

Dell e1505 $773
HP dv6000t $893
HP dv6000z $733
Compaq V6000t $701
Compaq V6000z $768

All are based on CPU that's a step above Celeron or Sempron. 512 Mb memory. 60 Gb 5400rpm drive or larger, b/g Wireless with bluetooth, and video card above GMA 950 with 15" screen.

Has anyone have experience with these laptop chime in home which is better in terms of durability?

Anyone know the difference between HP and compaq machine, they seemed to be by the same vendor.
 
I'd spend a little more and wait for the Asus A8Js. 7700go 512mb, 2ghz Core 2 Duo, 2gb ddr2ram, 100gb hdd, 14.1"screen, $1500. If you can't wait or thats too far out of your budget, i would get the e1505: decent all the way around...
