EDIT: Posts further down also discuss external hard drives.

Hi again all.

I am looking for a headset and usb drive to supplement my new computer build. Nothing too fancy, just decent quality for decent price that gets the job done. So far the reviews have been looking good for these items:

Creative Labs Fatal1ty Gaming Headset - $39

Patriot Xporter XT Boost 8 Gb USB2.0 Drive - $23

What do you guys think?

Chris

The headset is fine, but you can definitely get an 8GB USB stick for cheaper.

That 8 Gb stick is USB2.0, apparently has rubber water protection on its case, and has the highest rating for USB sticks on newegg.com.

Does that change your mind?

The link seems to be broken and simply give me some sort of error message.

Yeah my research indicates the best way to go is high grade headphones and high grade clip-on mic. Though, my budget is $88 CAD ($85 US) for the two items. Do you have any recommendations? My initial search claimed that headset to have good sound and microphone quality.

Honestly, if you already have some sort of sound device, I would save up for a really good audio setup (I assume you love music, who doesn't?!). Of course, if you don't listen to music that often or would rather spend your money elsewhere, then a cheap gaming headset is all you really need. I was just making a comment about how bomb good cans can be :). I used to compete in CS, CS:S, TF2, WoW, you name it, and I never really thought any of it required a GOOD headset. The one you picked is fine and will do the same thing as a $100 gaming headset. And like mfenn said, you can DEFINITELY get a cheaper USB stick.

A usb stick is a usb stick, and I agree with donut, get a nice set of ~$100 headphones. A person really isn't aware of how much of a difference good sound can make until that person experiences it.

How about this 8 Gb from Kingston for $16?

EDIT: Can you elaborate on why the headset is fine?

(I'm kind of thinking to stick with it because a) It's not that expensive, b) Reviews claim the sound and microphone quality is pretty high, c) Not wanting to cheap out too hard because although it's mostly for gaming I will want to hear songs sometimes as well.

My only other sound device is the speakers built into my monitor which I haven't tested yet but reviews aren't too crazy about and claim the sounds are like coming from a cave.)

Most gaming headsets will give you similar experiences. It's like trying to compare the WD Black to the Samsung F1. Basically the same speeds with difference in costs. A good pair of cans is like an SSD next to mechanical HDDs...And that headset is fine because it is at a decent cost from a known company, but the difference in that and a $80 gaming headset won't be noticeable (SQ-wise).

This. It is "fine" in that it is cheap and will do the job. Not excellent, but fine.

The Kingston stick is good.

Cool thanks. Also instead of making a new thread I thought I might ask about an external hard drive here too.

Western Digital My Passport 250 Gb - $60
http://www.canadacomputers.com/produ...item_id=030179

What do you think?
Also, should I have made a new thread?

Since you're still asking about accessories for the same purpose, I don't think that you should have made a new thread. Perhaps update the OP to indicate that you are thinking about an external hard drive as well.

Do you need the portability of a 2.5" drive? I don't think that that 250GB is a great value for a 2.5" drive anyway. Assuming you live near one of the stores, this Toshiba 500GB for $75 is a much better deal.
