Budget College Laptop

My friend is putting together a laptop for college in the $6-700 price range. He wants to do all his work on it, and watch DVD's. I couldn't convince him to bring his desktop, so this will have to do everything for him.

The choice is between a 1.4 ghz celeron M with 512 mb ram and a pentium m with 256 mb ram. Which would be better, considering battery life, speed, etc?

There are two ways of looking at it. The celeron with 512 ram will run a lot better in XP than the Pentium M with 256. However, you can always add more ram, and the Pentium M is a much better processor.

I'd say go with the Pentium M, invest in more ram later. When you give it 512 megs, it will run be a much stronger performer.

Agreed. Or, get an iBook instead 🙂

Needs another $200 or 300 for an iBook.

Pentium M, add more ram later.

i got myself a 256mb chip of ddr so-dimm for my laptop at newegg for only $27 shipped, during a 99cent shipping sale. I think the prices on the ram itself should have fallen a bit now, so you can probably get it for the same price without the sale.

go with the P-m and get more ram later when you have more money
