Don't normally get preachy but this is happening too much... a good friend of mine from work was killed Saturday evening, after losing control of his bike and being thrown off, he was pronounced dead on scene. he was not wearing a helmet, like so many people now do not. I don't know the laws in your state, but here in pennsylvania, for some reason, it is not required to wear a helmet.

So do yourself, and your family a favor, wear a helmet if you're going to ride a motorcycle.

RIP Tom "Big Guy" Fenton, 47 years old. :(

I would feel bad but he wasn't wearing a helmet. He could have easily prevented this.

Motorcycle helmets +1

I'm a bit of a hypocrite in that I often don't wear my seatbelt when driving for short distances... but on a bike I always wore full gear. Heck, even a spill taking a corner at 15mph can shave off some serious skin if you aren't wearing anything.

I'm for wearing helmets, but they shouldn't be mandated like they are in MD. I'm sorry for your loss Murphy :'^(

No, they should definitely be mandated.

You get tickets for not wearing a seat-belt. You should get the same for not wearing a helmet.

I think at a minimum helmets and a real motorcycle jacket should be required by law across all states.

It's just like seatbelt laws. Soemtimes you have to force the stupid people to protect themselves.

Seatbelt laws also need to be repealed. It's another government intrusion on people's lives. If you want to be babysat, Cuba may be more to your liking ;^)

It is kind of odd that self-preservation needs to be reinforced by legislation. You'd think that sort of thing would fall under the "self-preservation instinct" category.

I don't ride motorcycles, but I do always wear a seatbelt when I'm driving, and if I have passengers, I won't start moving until everyone's buckled in.

Holy crap, I agree with jpeyton. Did the ground suddenly freeze and bacon now has wings?

No, no you don't. Passing laws for someone's "own good" is one of the worst habits of the species h. sapiens.

If any aspect of your healthcare is being paid by me as a taxpayer, then you damned well better be wearing a seatbelt or helmet. You want to kill yourself, fine. But fuck if I want to pay for your stupid ass.

Has any studied showed that helmet laws reduced medical care. Does the difference between DOA due to not wearing a helmet make up for greater medical care for the ones that make it?

Then the better solution is to deny taxpayer-funded care to people who don't wear seatbelts or helmets, not to mandate seatbelt and helmet use.

First off, it isn't, and second thing if I'm going to be babysat, it better be done properly...

Cars limited to 20mph(mechanically governed to eliminate temptation)

All fast food banned

Meat products under strict, tight rationing

no petro chemicals to be used by consumers under any circumstances

College level study for professionals to use petro chemicals, but only under very limited, tightly controlled circumstances.

Power cutting tools to be absolutely verboten for consumers

and on, and on....

The OP just lost a good friend and that's all you have to say? You should have STFU.

Sorry for your loss Murphy55d. I lost a young brother to a motorcycle accident and he was wearing a helmet. Motorcycle are inherently dangerous with or without helmet.

I see no reason to repeal seatbelt laws or helmet laws. They work, and they save lives. If you want to off yourself go buy a gun.

Well, there's no way that's going to happen so I vote for seatbelt and helmet laws instead.

You're Canadian? I'm wondering where this tax payer funded healthcare's coming from. I need to get some since I'm fresh out of health insurance.

It's hardly just for that person's own good.

Ask the dead guy's family if they support helmet laws.

Ask the guy who had the privilege of scraping his dead carcass off the pavement if they support helmet laws.

Ask the paramedics who tried to revive him if they support helmet laws.

We prohibit drinking and driving because people don't know their own limits. Should we repeal those laws as well?

We prohibit DWI because it directly affects others. Are even trying to be serious?

You mean how second hand smoking directly affects others?
