BANGKOK (Reuters) - A Thai Buddhist monk cut off his penis with a machete because he had an erection during meditation and declined to have it reattached, saying he had renounced all earthly cares, a doctor and a newspaper said on Wednesday.

The 35-year-old monk, whose name was withheld for privacy reasons, allowed medical staff at Maharaj hospital, 780 km (480 miles) south of Bangkok to dress his wound, but refused reattachment, hospital chief Prawing Euanontouch said.

"We cleaned up the wound, gave him some stitches, but he declined to have it reattached because he said had abandoned everything," Prawing told Reuters by telephone.

Prawing declined to comment on the monk's erection, which Bangkok-based Kom Chad Luk tabloid reported on its Web site.

Cut off his weiner because he was upset that he got a hardon? That's not very Buddhist of him. A true Buddhist would say "meh" and move on with life. Apparently, he cared enough about his "earthly" appearance that his woody bugged him.

I wonder what he was thinking about whilst meditating? Hmm. Maybe it was what he was thinking about that actually upset him. The choppage was just his way of ensuring that he didn't act on it.

wouldn't it make more sense to castrate himself rather than remove the penis? (if the goal is to remove sexual desire). lack of a penis will make going to the toilet somewhat more difficult, I would imagine. I think the surgeons made a mistake in not reattaching the penis.

Sounds like one of the Four Noble Truths to me.

- Suffering exists
- There is a cause for suffering - this stems from desire
- There is an end to suffering - this is attained through acheiving Nirvana, the release of all desire or craving
- Follow the Eightfold Path to accomplish this


Didn't you watch Fight Club? :)The things you own end up owning you. A number of themes in that movie seem to follow Buddhist philosophy.
