Plague crops up in the south west (NM and Arizona) every so often. Last I heard several cases a year showed up in NM. The thing about bubonic plague is that you can treat it with common antibiotics like tetracycaline (I knew this even before watching House ;)). What I would be worried about is something like Hanta virus.

Meh, it happens every once in a while in developed countries, and it's quite treatable with modern medicine.

Yeah, possibly tied to the plague, although I don't think there's been definitive proof one way or the other concerning that. But I could be wrong.
