"why not make Intel's job as hard as possible? It's only fair"

;)

By the way, love the site. Great work.

Thanks Regs :)

It's almost 5AM here, going to see if I can manage to nap a bit before the third day of the show.

Take care,
Anand

All I have to say is "UGH". I hope it doesn't come out at all or at least for a couple of years. There just doesn't seem to be a good reason to change all this. THe heat argument is bogus to me. I hope AMD would "force" the ATX standard to hold this off....

Is it just me, or does BTX cause severe gastro intestinal pain and incontinence? Opening your case from the right side seems wholly blasphemous and an afront to all that is good and holy in this world.

I could care less which side of the case I have to open to access what's inside, as long as my reason for doing so is due to better cooling and neater cabling ability.

I'd rather have things the other way, because of where my case is. That way I would be able to have a window if I wished, that I could see into. (True for both my PC's).
It doesn't seem to bad, I don't know why people are complaining.
In the end oyu go for a new PSU/mobo/case anyway.
Plus there are socket changes happening, like 775/939 and PCI-Express.
Introducing something else new at a tim ewhen most other things are changing seems to make sense and cause less hassle.

BTX, 939/775, PCI-Express, SATA
All need new parts, all will be here in the next ~6 months (assuming people get their BTX designs out of the door).

Plus, getting everything into an ATX case is pretty hard, my case isn't small and it's a mess with wires going everywhere (which is necessary, there's no other way to do it) - BTX looks like it has the potential to be "cleanrer" especially with power leads (ie: 20 pin main connector).

We certainly didn't ask Intel for it and don't want it.

I also hear that BTX doesn't work well for Athlon 64 because of the distance between the cpu socket and the DIMM slots.

Coinsidence or just another Intel ploy?

macro2 im pretty sure you heard wrong and THANKS ANAND i was waiting for more btx stuff, im glad you pay attention to our crazy rambelings in the forums

edit: macro no offense, there is an a64 btx memory problem but it would prolly be taken care of it amd put out an a64 btx reference design

BTX may not work for Athlon 64
by Scott Wasson - 08:30 am, June 2, 2004

COMPUTEX ? I've spoken with several sources here on the show floor from motherboard and enclosure makers who have all said the same thing: the BTX form factor is a non-starter on AMD systems. The problem seems to be the relative CPU and DIMM placement; the standard requires placement of DIMM sockets too far from the processor. With the Athlon 64's integrated memory controller, following the BTX spec becomes very difficult.

was there this much noise when we switched from AT to ATX? yes i do realize that atx made things somewhat easier - but it was still a form factor change.

I've given up on waiting for BTX. Had Intel kept developing the presshots and tejas, it might have been more of a factor, but now with the multicore emphasis generating less heat, I can't really see it catching on (just watercool the damn thing).

The other technologies are worth waiting for because they will bring significant improvements. Hopefully the new stuff matures quickly so i can upgrade in a few months.

a SFF with 100% watercooling with enough power to drive the new videocards is all I'm asking for. Then the BTX can run its own race.
