BSODs

ok, so since I got new broadband I have been getting BSODs on my PC. The first one was

DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL together with ndis.sys

the second was

DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL together with sd.sys

and one just now was

BAD_POOL_CALLER.

When I got the first one I got a lot of results that it has something to do with NIC cards, but since I didn't get the error again I wasn't too worried. But this is becoming a pain, it totally screwed up firefox and deleted all my bookmarks and add-on settings in the last crash.

Mainboard: ASUS A8N32 SLI DELUXE
Graphics: 8800 320MB GTS
Ram: 2 GB Corsair XMS
CPU: X2 4200+
Sound: Audigy 2 ZS
Harddrives: 1 x 500 GB, 1 x 400 GB, 1 x 120GB
ROM drives: 1 x DVD-RW, 1 x CD-RW
edit: the onboard ethernet cards are: Marvell Yukon 88E8053 PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet Controller and NVIDIA nForce Networking Controller.

I have no idea what is causing this, the only explanation I can think of might be that my onboard lan doesn't like the router my ISP sent me. I got the "BAD_POOL_CALLER" BSOD when I switched to the other onboard lan to see if it would make a difference.

Also, I then went into the BIOS and switched off everything I didn't need like serial port, game port, parallel port etc, and when I tried to boot into windows it said that my PC did not support ACPI(or something along those lines) and I had to go and switch them all back on again so windows would boot!

Anyway I've probably given too much information here so here's my question: what on earth can I do? :( I've been looking forward to this broadband for months.

Turn off Legacy USB support and disable PEG Link Mode in the BIOS.
Use BIOS 1205 or later
Be sure and use the latest network, video and chipset drivers.

Have these NICs always been on and not utilized, or did you just turn them on in the BIOS? If you have one, try using a PCI NIC and disable the others.

Twice when I got a bunch of different random BSODs, it was caused by bad RAM. In your case that wouldn't be my first thought, but RAM can still go bad suddenly. Try running memtest, or try using a single stick of known-good ram.

I got a nasty BSOD with my old A8N32-SLI on Vista.

I won't purchase another nVIDIA chipset motherboard ever again.

What can you do? Read my .sig, read the web page in the .sig, and follow the BSOD debugging guide. That will tell you, within Windows Debugger, how to read the .dmp file generated every time the PC crashes. Open up your previous dumpfiles, and debug them, and post the output from a few of them - post the output you get when you type '!analyze -v' in the debugger - and you'll see why your PC crashed.

Debug the .dmp dumpfiles and you can find out why your PC *really* crashed in under 5 minutes.

Ok @Billb2 I'm not sure what's going but I can get to www.asus.com but I can't get to any of the support links from there, it just says "Connecting support.asus.com" and then gives me a "took too long to respond page" on pretty much any of the other links.

@dclive, I've just downloaded your program and I'm trying to run through it.

At first I thought, after reading some posts on utorrents website, that allowing utorrent to send and receive emails might be crashing it, because I'd enabled that at around the same time as I'd gotten my broadband, so I disabled it, and haven't gotten an error since until just now, when I got a BAD_POOL_CALLER again.

The Windows Debugger is Microsoft's program. Take care that you're going to my website, and not downloading MPSReports (well, you can, and you might as well, but for debugging the dumps you need Windows Debugger, which you'll learn about on the web page in my .sig).

@dclive Ok I've gotten the debugging tool open and working. Should I post some of the results here? Or do you want me to PM?

Everything's public and open here. Post away. What's the cause for the dumps?

Probably caused by : TDI.SYS ( TDI!TdiExecuteRequest+1d3 )

That's all of them, I've googled some of the files from the first 3 dumps and it seems they're:

NVENETFD.sys - not sure but i think the 'NV' indicates something to do with NVIDIA( ie my graphics card or my motherboard chipset )
NVNRM.SYS - something to do with my motherboard drivers
SiRemFil.sys - Silicon Image file, a SATA driver of some sort
ctaud2k.sys - I'm pretty sure this is from my soundcard ( Creative Audigy 2 ZS )

I'm not sure where to go from here, shall I just try and get the latest drivers for absolutely everything? As I mentioned in one of the above posts I can't seem to get to Asus's driver site at all :S

The NVENETFD nVidia NIC drivers look like they're the problem. Replace or upgrade them from nVidia's home page (do you have the latest drivers from there?); if you can't replace the drivers, disable the NIC in BIOS, slap in another NIC, and see if the problems go away.

I'll try upgrading the drivers first, I have 2 onboard NICs so if push comes to shove I'll just disable the NVIDIA one. Unfortunate though, as I use both.

Hrm it appears NVIDIA don't offer individual driver downloads, only the entire chipset package. Guess I'll go with that since it's newer than my current one.

Oh, and something that I just remembered, after the first BSOD I stopped using the Nvidia ethernet and switched to the other one (Marvell Yukon), I disabled the NVIDIA one in windows hardware manager, but not on the BIOS, would this be of significance?

Well, since the second dump clearly blame the NVE... driver, it's still loading, so you need to update it or disable it (in the BIOS).

Ok, everything reinstalled, installed the graphics drivers before the motherboard drivers by accident but I hope that doesn't matter. Unfortunately I won't get to test this for very long as I'm moving my PC home over christmas where I have no broadband, but I will post an update here nevertheless sometime in February most likely. Thanks very much for your help, dclive! Have a happy christmas!
